Hi Julie -- Thanks for your question. No, this mattress does not require a box spring. The optional platform foundation that they offer will be perfectly sufficient to provide under-support for this mattress. The main thing is that this mattress needs to be placed on a smooth, solid, flat surface -- so even the specific Nature's Sleep foundation is not required per se. For example, you could also put this mattress on a platform bed or an adjustable base. You can even use your previous foundation if it is in good condition (no sagging, broken slats, squeaking, etc.), is the same size, and meets the criteria of being a smooth, solid, flat surface.
