Full Size (Double) Mattresses
The Smallest Mattress Built For Two

Last updated on August 19, 2020

The full-sized mattress, also called a double bed, is an option for smaller couples, young adults, or even children. A full size mattress measures 54" wide by 75" long. In the United States, "double" and "full" terms are used interchangeably.

A full size bed is larger than a twin but smaller than a queen. Relative to a standard twin bed, a full-size is the same length but offers 15 inches more width.  Relative to a queen bed, the full-size is 6 inches narrower as well as 5 inches shorter.

For decades, the full-sized mattress was the most commonly purchased mattress for adults. but the full size has been overtaken by that of larger of queen- and king-sized options. Full-sized beds are a good option for small bedrooms, or if you want to use an antique or vintage bed that was made prior to the introduction of queen-size mattresses in the late 1950's.

Relative to a twin mattress, the full-sized mattress is a popular choice for teenagers, many of whom may outgrow a twin mattress once they grow taller than 5'9" tall.  Full beds are also an increasingly popular choice for kids, since the extra space allows a parent to more easily read in bed with the child or otherwise help the child fall asleep.

Full-Size (a.k.a. Double) Mattress Dimensions

Standard full / double beds are 54” wide and 75” long -- big enough for two small or medium sized adults, but rather small for two larger or taller adults. Here are a couple of variations you may come across.

Full extra long mattresses are available for taller folks, which are the same width (54" wide) but add 5 inches in additional length (making them 80" long). Because this size is less common than the standard Full size, your choice of types and styles may be restricted, and it may be more difficult to find sheets and other bedding to fit it.

Three-quarter (3/4) beds are a bit narrower than a full-size bed (48" wide), but the same length (75" long).  The three-quarter size is no longer common, but is still available if you need it to fit an antique or heirloom bed. Due to the historic popularity of this size, many classic antique iron beds require a 3/4 size mattress. As compared to the "super single" size, which also falls in between twin and full, a 3/4 bed is the same width but is 9 inches shorter.

What Size is a Double Bed in Canada?

Mattress sizes in Canada are the same as they are in the United States, but you might see them expressed in centimeters rather than inches. A standard full / double bed is 54" by 75", or 135 cm by 190 cm.

Double beds in the UK are also 135 cm by 190 cm. You will also find what's called a "small double" in the UK, which measures 120 cm by 190 cm, very similar to a three-quarter bed in the US. A 'small double' is likely a good fit for an antique bed.
