Q&A Forum FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about GoodBed's Q&A Forum

What kinds of questions can I ask in the GoodBed Q&A forum?

Most importantly, your questions should be focused on purchasing a mattress, so that other visitors will find the answers useful in their search for a bed. Before you ask your question, please make sure to search for a similar question – with the forum search feature, you can search questions by their title or tags. This will save you time and keep the forum as useful as possible for everyone. In addition, questions should be specific, answerable and focused. Open-ended questions or poll-like questions are not useful to our visitors. If you’re looking for mattress reviews, we encourage you to check out our mattress reviews and store reviews.

What questions should I not ask on the GoodBed Q&A forum?

Here are some types of questions that don’t pass our relevant, specific and answerable test:

  • No real answer. For example, if you ask "What do other readers think of SampleRest mattresses?" It is purely subjective, not specific enough, and poll-like. This tends to end in a host of fruitless responses.
  • A disguised rant. If you are baiting other users with your question – e.g., "Why is SampleRest so terrible?" – we will remove it.
  • A disguised promotion. We will not accept shilling in your question – e.g., "Is it me, or is SampleRest the most revolutionary mattress company in history?"
  • Not relevant. If your question is not relevant to other mattress shoppers – e.g., "How often should I water my roses?" – it will be removed.
  • A question about GoodBed. We want to help our visitors with any questions, comments or issues with our site ourselves. Please use the contact us page to suggest a feature, report a problem or ask a site-specific question. This will help keep the Q&A forum focused on buying a mattress.

Who moderates this community?

The short answer is: You, with a little help from the GoodBed moderators... The Q&A forum is largely moderated by our users, as our karma system allows users to earn rights to perform a variety of moderation tasks.

What criteria does the GoodBed moderator use in flagging questions or answers?

The GoodBed moderator uses the same criteria that you should use when choosing to vote a question up or down. Here is a quick run-down:

  • Not on topic. This is the most common reason we would flag a question or answer. Our number one goal is to keep the forum relevant.
  • Misinformation. If we see something that is blatantly false or misleading, we will flag it. We ask that you do the same.
  • Personal attacks, vulgar language or spammy content. We will flag any question, answer or comment that violates the Granny test. The Granny test is simple – if you wouldn’t say it in front of your Granny, don’t post it. Personal attacks, foul language and spammy HTML or punctuation will be removed.

How does the karma system work?

When a question or answer is upvoted, the user who posted it will gain some points, which are called "karma points". These points serve as a rough measure of the trust they have earned from the GoodBed community. Various moderation tasks are gradually assigned to the users based on these points. For example, if you ask an interesting question or give a helpful answer, your input will be upvoted. On the other hand, if the answer is misleading, it will be downvoted. Each vote in favor will generate 15 points, each vote against will subtract 1 point. There is a limit of 200 points that can be accumulated per question or answer.

The table below explains karma requirements for each type of moderation task.

  • add comments - 0
  • delete comments - 400
  • close own questions - 60
  • reopen own questions - 120
  • retag questions - 150
  • edit any answer - 400
  • open any closed question - 600
  • delete any comment - 400

How do I post a question in the forum?

It’s simple! You can start a question anonymously, but for quality purposes, you will need to register with GoodBed for your question to be posted. The instructions will guide you through the quick and easy signup for your free GoodBed account. You can even simplify the signup process with social sign in from your favorite social network.

To register, do I need to create a new password?

No, you don't have to. You can also sign in to GoodBed through your account with most popular websites, including Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Twitter, Microsoft, AOL, and more.

Can representatives of mattress manufacturers or retailers answer questions?

Absolutely! As the makers and sellers of mattresses, industry participants typically have the most expertise to contribute. By sharing this expertise in the forum in a helpful way, a salesperson, store owner or manufacturer representative can establish credibility and awareness amongst consumers. Industry representatives are simply asked to abide by some additional guidelines for answering questions.

What is Gravatar?

For profile pictures of our users, we use the Gravatar service (which stands for "globally recognized avatar" and is affiliated with WordPress).  If you already have a Gravatar account, just use the same email address in your GoodBed account as you use for Gravatar – we will then display your profile picture automatically.  By default, gravatar appears as a square filled with a snowflake-like figure. If you do not already have a Gravatar account, it only takes a couple minutes to set it up by clicking here.

Why can other people edit my questions / answers?

The goal of the GoodBed Q&A forum is to provide the most useful information for mattress shoppers. By allowing experienced users of the site to edit questions and answers like wiki pages, we are able to improve the overall quality of the knowledge base. If you feel that one of our users has abused this privilege, please let us know.

What if I have an objection to a post in the Q&A forum? Will the moderator remove it?

We moderate the GoodBed Q&A forum for posts that violate these guidelines. If you happen to see something we missed, please flag it for our review. However, if a post meets our criteria, it will probably stay put after review. We won’t remove forum posts simply because of a disagreement amongst our users.

Why did you remove my forum post?

Most often, we remove a post if it doesn’t meet these guidelines. We may also remove duplicate posts.

You can edit your post by clicking the Edit button below your post, either right after you post or within your account dashboard.

How can I delete my post?
