Do peoples' preferences for firmness / softness of mattresses actually change over time?

This idea has something I've mostly heard of and read online, and not something I've heard IRL or have experienced. It doesn't seem like my preferences have changed at all from when I was a kid. I've had mattresses for years at a time without my satisfaction levels changing over time, and I've never had a hotel bed that was uncomfortable to sleep in, and I've been at mostly average hotels.

One Answer:

Hi there -- Thanks for your question. Yes, mattress preferences can change a lot for some people, though they don't necessarily change for everyone. Most commonly, people's preferences become much more specific as they get older. A typical person in their 20's or younger can "sleep on anything," but this statement would be relatively rare coming from someone in their 50's or older. If you are among that group, consider yourself extremely lucky!

But while your preferences may or may not change, your requirements (ie, what you need from your mattress in order to obtain proper spinal alignment and pressure relief) will almost certainly change as you age. For example, as you get older, your skin has less fatty tissue and your bones have less muscle, making you more susceptible to pressure points. This changes the type of mattress that will work for you, particularly if you are a side sleeper. Change like this happens over decades so they can be hard to notice, but it generally starts in middle age.

Lastly, your mattress requirements will also be affected by life events or other bodily changes. For example, if you gain or lose a material amount of weight, this will affect the spinal alignment you get from any given mattress in a given position. Women who are pregnant may go through a period where their mattress needs change. And women experiencing menopause tend to become more likely to have issues with mattresses that sleep hot. Likewise, if you get injured, especially in your back or spine, this will likely change your requirements, as can other health conditions.

Similarly, your priorities might change. If you start sleeping with a pet or partner, you may start to place more of a premium on motion isolation. Or as you get older, you might place more value on the ease of repositioning. Likewise, you may just decide you want a mattress that works well on an adjustable base, or uses fewer chemicals.

So on balance, there are many factors that can cause your mattress needs, preferences, and priorities to change as you go through life. Hopefully they won't happen too much within the lifespan of any given mattress. But they will almost certainly happen across the multiple mattress purchases you make in your lifetime.

I hope that's helpful.
