Hi Tom -- Thanks for your question. Yes, adding a topper can be an effective way to make a mattress softer and/or more conforming. As long as the underlying mattress is firmer from both a comfort and support standpoint, it could be a good candidate for adding a topper. Assuming you are using the terms "Firm" and "Medium-Firm" the same way we do (ie, "Medium-Firm" is softer than "Firm"), then this should be OK. For additional context here, toppers can be used to increase softness, conformance, memory feel, and/or surface bounce. They can also be used to add surface firmness from a feel standpoint, but they can NOT be used to make a mattress firmer from a support standpoint.
