Hi there -- Thanks for your question. Yes, with rare exceptions, modern mattresses do not need to work in connection with a box spring. As such, they require only a solid, sturdy, stable, supportive surface to rest on. This could be a matching foundation unit (which you might still think of as a box spring, but does not actually contain any springs), a platform bed, a slatted base, an adjustable base — or yes, even the floor.
