Sonora extra firm is too firm

We bought this mattress and box spring a few years ago and it is still way too firm for me. When we purchased it we were advised to get firm since it would soften up over time - but this hasn’t happened. Any suggestions? Also the mattress and high box spring with the additional knickerbocker bed frame make it too high! Can we eliminate the box spring And just put the mattress on the frame?
