Hi there -- Thanks for your question. Most mattresses today don't 'work together' with their foundation the way they used to 20-30 years ago, when box springs were specifically designed to enhance and complement the support characteristics of the mattress above them. Today, with a few rare exceptions, the foundation's job is simply to provide a solid, stable, sturdy support surface for the mattress. As such, the mattress doesn't need a foundation per se. But if it doesn't have a foundation, it needs something else to rest on that will provide an adequately strong support surface. This could even be the floor. But if not the floor or the manufacturer-provided foundation, it needs to be something equally solid like that. Without this, you'll be jeopardizing the longevity of the mattress as well as the validity of its warranty. I hope that's helpful.
