Note: This is not a review. This is our plain-English explanation and overview of the current Kingsdown Select collection of mattresses available at Mattress Firm.

Kingdown Select Mattresses: Common Features

There are three models in the Kingsdown Select collection, all named after wine varietals (Chardonnay, Malbec, and Meritage). The names are a clue that these mattresses have an "old world" quality in terms of craftsmanship, materials, and features. They are also VERY tall mattresses, with the Meritage topping out at 16.5".

Mattress Height
Chardonnay Firm 14.5"
Malbec Plush Pillow Top 16"
Meritage Plush Euro Top 17.5"

High coil counts

All three of these mattresses share the same pocketed coil support unit. There's a lot going on in this unit, so let's take a closer look. First, you have 1,791 coils in a queen size mattress: That's a LOT of coils, almost twice as many as you'll find in competing hybrid mattresses. These coils are smaller in diameter than typical mattress coils, so Kingsdown can fit a lot more of them in the mattress.

This is a zoned coil unit, meaning the manufacturer uses firmer coils in some areas of the bed, and softer coils in other parts. You'll find firmer coils under the hip area, as extra support for the heaviest part of your body. There are also firmer coils all around the edge to assist with edge support, in addition to a foam encasement around all sides of the mattress as additional edge support. That foam border is pierced to allow for air flow.

A unique feature is a foam "rail" that runs from one short edge to the other down the middle of the mattress, essentially splitting the mattress in two. It's not something you'll feel; rather the foam acts as a shock absorber, dampening any movement from one side of the bed to the other. If you are part of a couple and are sensitive to a partner's movements on the other side of the bed, this foam rail means you're unlikely to feel another person changing positions or getting in and out of bed. Kingsdown called this their "Silent Partner" technology.

Natural materials

Though not an entirely natural mattress series, the Kingsdown Select models do include a number of natural materials.

First, the cover is a rayon-based fabric; rayon is a fiber made from wood pulp. Also included in the top quilt/cover layer is natural Joma wool. Wool is a natural material that keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter, and is a natural moisture regulator.

Next, each of the three beds has a top comfort layer of natural Dunlop latex made from rubber trees.

There are some polyurethane foams (petroleum-based) in the mattresses, so on the whole, they could not be called natural mattresses. However, the wool, latex, and rayon are all up at the top, where you'll come in closer contact with them.

Old-world craftsmanship

The Kingsdown Select Chardonnay, Malbec, and Meritage mattresses have a traditional, high-end craftsmanship that's both functional and aesthetic.

While most mattresses hold their layers of materials together with glues, Kingsdown instead uses functional tufting for these beds. These are yarns, anchored by fabric buttons, that travel through all of the layers of the mattress to cinch them together and keep them from shifting.

The side panels of the bed are made from a luxurious velvet fabric in a checked pattern, with sturdy, box-stitched handles to help you move and rotate the mattress as needed.

The corners of the matching foundations include metal guards to protect the fabric and hold the shape.

The covers are stretchy, billowy, and very soft. And the fabric has been dipped in silver particles, intended to give the mattresses some anti-microbial properties.

Kingsdown Select

If you have a known issue of sleeping hot, or if you are just concerned about potentially feeling hot, the Kingsdown Select mattresses have a number of features to increase air flow.

The foam border around the mattresses is pierced with holes so that air can flow in and out of the mattress. The latex layer on top is also pierced with pin-core holes, so air can travel vertically through the mattress as well.

No glue is used to hold the layers together, so there's no glue layer inhibiting air flow. The wool included in the cover is a natural regulator of heat and moisture, and the cover's rayon fibers are also highly breathable.

While these mattresses do not have any specific cooling features like phase-change material or gel, their overall construction and materials naturally maximize air flow, and we do not think that this mattress will feel hot.

Now let's take a closer look at the individual mattresses in the collection.

Kingsdown Select Chardonnay Firm

The 14.5" tall Chardonnay mattress is the firmest of the three models in the collection. It features one inch of Dunlop latex as the primary comfort material. While Kingsdown calls this mattress a "Firm," we found it to be softer than what we would classify a true Firm. Rather, the Chardonnay is a Medium Firm on our softness scale.

In terms of cushioning, the billowy cover and quilting, combined with the firmer support layer, net out at an average cushioning depth, meaning the feeling is a blend of 'floating on top' and 'sinking in' to the mattress.

As with the other mattresses, we thought motion isolation was excellent, while at the same time, this mattress has a lot of bounce and a very traditional mattress feel.

The Chardonnay mattress runs about $2,600 (queen size) at the time of this writing.

Kingsdown Select Malbec Plush Pillow Top

The Malbec is a 16" mattress that includes a pillow top. It has the same 1" layer of Dunlop latex, but adds a layer of 891 (queen size) 1" diameter microcoils, arranged as a sheet under the latex (see image below).

The soft microcoils add softness, cushioning, and conformance to the mattress, and we judged it a Medium Soft on our scale. It's the softest of the three mattresses in the collection.

The microcoils are encased in what the manufacturer called "delayed response pockets," and when compressed, the pockets do take some extra time to come back to shape. The end result is a tiny bit of a "melting" sensation on the bed, though not as much as you might experience on a memory foam mattress.

Pricing is about $3,100 for the queen size Malbec mattress (at the time of this writing).

Kingsdown Select

Kingsdown Select Meritage Plush Euro Top

The Meritage mattress measures 17.5", the tallest of the three mattresses in the series. Like the Malbec, the Meritage includes the layer of microcoils in the pilllow top, but it has more Dunlop latex--a 2" layer right under the cover.

While Kingsdown calls both the Malbec and the Meritage "Plush," we found the Meritage to have a Medium feel on our scale, right in between the Chardonnay and the Malbec.

In terms of feel, the extra cushioning materials make for a bit more conformance, but overall, you still get a blend of "sinking in" versus "floating on top."

Pricing for the Meritage mattress is about $3,600 in queen size at the time of this writing.

Delivery and Returns

  • Free standard delivery
  • Exchange or return with fees

These Kingsdown Select mattresses are exclusively sold at Mattress Firm, and the retailer dictates the terms of delivery and returns. Currently, Mattress Firm offers free basic delivery to your door or garage. That means you will be responsible for moving the mattress into your home. Alternatively, you can pay extra for in-home delivery options.

Mattress Firm currently offers a 120-night sleep trial. If you aren't comfortable on your new mattress, you can exchange it for a different one minus a $100 shipping fee and a 10% restocking fee. • 10-year limited warranty

Mattress Firm and Kingsdown include a 10-year limited warranty for these models. If you require repair or replacement for an issue covered by the warranty, the owner will be responsible for shipping costs. Perhaps the issue most important to consumers is sagging.
