Note: This is not a review. This is our plain-English explanation and overview of the Beautyrest Platinum collection of mattresses for the 2019-2020 model year. Also see our overview of the Beautyrest collection (the company's entry-level beds), the Beautyrest Black line (the company's luxury mattresses), the Beautyrest Silver collection and the Beautyrest Hybrid line (its memory foam mattresses) for 2019-2020.

Beautyrest Platinum Mattresses: Shared Features

There are 11 models in the current Platinum series from Beautyrest, separated into two "levels" -- we'll call them Level 1 and Level 2. (Beautyrest does have names for the two levels, but be aware these may sometimes differ by store.)

The two levels share many of the same features, with the main difference being the addition of a layer of micro-coils for the Level 2 models; these are meant to add some extra conformance and pressure relief.

Within each level, there are 5 comfort levels: two pillow top versions and three regular mattresses, for a total of 11 mattresses. (Of course, no one retailer will carry all 11 models.)

Beautyrest calls the least expensive model in the collection the Jaycrest Plush; the remainder of the Level 1 mattresses fall under the Spring Grove collection, with the Level 2 models called Haven Pines. Be aware some retailers are attaching other names, or substitute names for the Beautyrest Platinum models. For example, at Raymour & Flanigan, you'll see some Platinum mattresses called 'Landon Springs.' Avondale,' 'Greenbrook,' Macy's carries the 'Platinum Preferred Cedar Ridge' and 'Platinum Preferred Chestnut Hill.'

It's worth noting that these new Beautyrest Platinum mattresses do not include any hybrid memory foam mattresses as it did in years past; now, Beautyrest designates and entirely separate Beautyrest Hybrid collection for those looking for lots of memory foam and that 'sinking into the bed' feeling. While the beds in the Platinum series do include some memory foam, it's a small amount, and not enough to give you any of that slow, melting sensation we associate with memory foam.

Altogether, the mattresses in the Platinum collection have more in common than they do differences. Differences are mainly mattress height as well as comfort/feel. Prices start about about $1,199 (queen size) ranging up to $1,899.

Materials

All of the Platinum models share the same pocketed coil support unit with 1,000 coils (queen size), along with a foam edge perimeter all around the bed for added edge support. (By comparison, the Beautyrest Silver collection of mattresses features a 900-coil unit.)

The gauge (strength) of the steel used for the coils varies by model; that's what helps give each mattress its 'soft' or 'firm' feel.

All of the models in the Platinum collection also include some memory foam, but it's just a small amount (represented by the blue in the images below). While it's there to provide pressure relief, there's not enough of it to give any of the Platinum mattresses any kind of traditional slow-melting memory foam feel. (If you are interested in a Beautyrest mattress that has lots of memory foam feel, see our coverage of the Beautyrest Hybrid collection.

A variety of other comfort foams are used to vary the softness (or feel) of each mattress.

The main difference between the Level 1 and Level 2 models is the addition of a layer of micro coils, which Beautyrest calls Back Care 3X.

Beautyrest Platinum Layers

InfiniCool Phase Change Material

Many of the current Beautyrest mattresses include cooling features, and the Platinum series is no exception. InfiniCool is an applied layer of phase-change material just below the mattress cover. Phase change treatments are meant to keep the mattress feeling cool to the touch until your body warms it; the intention is to keep the bed cool until you fall asleep.

Some of the other Beautyrest collections include phase change material in the cover -- closer to the body, where the effect is more likely to be felt. With the Platinum beds, we did not find them initially cool to the touch as we did with some other of the Beautyrest mattress collections.

Beautyrest Platinum Level 1

There are 6 mattresses in the less expensive Jaycrest and Spring Grove mattresses in the Platinum series. They vary by firmness level, cushioning depth, and mattress height.

Beautyrest Platinum Mattress Height Estimated Price
Jaycrest Plush 13" $1,199
Spring Grove Plush 14" $1,299
Spring Grove Luxury Firm 14" $1,299
Spring Grove Extra Firm 13.5" $1,299
Spring Grove Plush Pillow Top 15" $1,399
spring Grove Luxury Firm Pillow Top 15" $1,399

To illustrate the range of feels available, we took a closer look at the Platinum Jaycrest Plush, which in our opinion felt like a Medium Soft on our scale, with relatively deep cushioning depth. On the other end, the Spring Grove Extra Firm is a true Extra Firm on our scale, with very little 'sink' and little cushioning depth. The Spring Grove Plush Pillow Top, on the other hand, has lots of softness and deep cushioning, which we might call a Soft on our scale.

Without huge differences in materials and construction, your preferred feel is the main differentiator between models.

Beautyrest Platinum Level 2

The big difference between the two levels of Beautyrest Platinum mattress is the addition of a layer of micro coils in the Level 2 beds. Beautyrest calls this feature Back Care 3X (there are 2,000 micro coils, added to the 1,000 pocketed coils, which gets you to 3,000.)

The micro coils are intended to add some additional conformance and pressure relief to the Level 2 mattresses in the Platinum series. The Level 2 mattresses are also an inch or so taller than the similar-feel Level 1 model.

Beautyrest Platinum Mattress Height Estimated Price
Haven Pines Plush 14.5" $1,599
Haven Pines Luxury Firm 14.5" $1,599
Haven Pines Extra Firm 14" $1,599
Haven Pines Plush Pillow Top 16" $1,899
Haven Pines Luxury Firm Pillow Top 16" $1,899.)
