Hi Liz -- Thanks for your question. We found that mattress to be a Medium-Soft on our softness spectrum, and even toward the softer end of that particular designation. The softness in that model comes particularly from the top few inches of the mattress. As a result, we found that pushing the mattress in by a couple inches with your fingertips was extremely easy relative to most mattresses. Below that it gets a little firmer, so pushing in the next couple inches gets noticeably harder, but is still roughly on par with an average mattress. So that all netted out to a Medium-Soft in our book. So, to answer your question, I would say that if you don't find what I described above to be true, then it may very well have some softening up to do. Most mattresses do in fact soften up noticeably in the first year, especially ones with some of the softer foams and memory foams that are found in this model. I hope that's helpful.
