Hi Suzie -- Thanks for your question. No, a box spring is not required for this mattress -- you could put one on a platform bed, for example. For purposes of maintaining warranty coverage, the only thing that is required is that the mattress is used on a sturdy, stable surface that provides adequate support for the mattress, including underneath the center of the bed. This last point is especially critical for a king or queen size bed. I hope that's helpful.
