What to add to make an extra firm softer?

Hi,

My husband and I just purchased the extra firm Serta Recognition. It's perfect for him, not so much me. I tend to be a side sleeper. What can I add to the mattress to soften it up a bit? Not sure if I should add a memory foam/gel top or just a really good mattress pad. Any suggestions?
