Hi there -- As far as we know, Purple mattresses are made to their specifications by various contract manufacturers in different parts of the US. This is the same practice followed by the vast majority of other well-known 'consumer direct' mattress companies (eg, Casper, Tuft & Needle, Saatva, etc.), since these companies don't tend to have their own manufacturing facilities. As of now, Purple mattresses are only sold online through the company's website -- not through any physical stores. Of course, like many online mattress sellers, they mitigate the inability to try the mattress before buying by offering a very generous return policy, which you can see here. |
The comment about there not being any retail availability was certainly true AT THE TIME the response was written, I'll give you that. And would have thought nothing of it. But "Purple" and it's predecessor companies have NEVER farmed out manufacturing. They CAN'T! The materials and process are proprietary and as far as Purple goes, have never even been licensed to another manufacturer. I apologize for "ripping into you" when you were certainly only trying to be helpful. But one look at the Purple product or website would make it obvious (as it always has been) that the Purple mattress is not and CANNOT be farmed out to nameless mattress OEM suppliers. I have owned the Intellibed predecessor to the Purple mattress for almost ten years, and it is NOTHING like any other mattress in the world. Thank you for letting me post here anyway and I again apologize for my tone and offense I may have given. |
No problem Kurt, apology accepted. Regarding the manufacturing, I'm not sure why having proprietary materials and process would prevent a company from outsourcing their manufacturing. Similarly, how could someone tell from "one look" at Purple's product or website that their product has never been made by a contract manufacturer? Can you tell from Apple's website whether the iPhone is made by a contract manufacturer? Apple most certainly has proprietary technology, and yet every single iPhone is made by a contract manufacturer. Respectfully, outsourcing your manufacturing is not the same thing as licensing out your technology -- a third party manufacturer can be given the contractual right to apply your proprietary processes to make your product to your specifications for you only. May I ask whether you are affiliated with Purple in some way? You seem really confident in your information about them for an ordinary consumer -- even one who lives in Utah and has owned a similar mattress for many years. :) As for us, we aren't affiliated with Purple, but we have been building a deep base of knowledge and relationships in this industry for nearly 10 years. Over that time we've become pretty plugged in and privy to a thing or two that an ordinary consumer would have no way of knowing. In any case, I think it's pretty inconsequential to a consumer whether Purple has ever outsourced manufacturing of its mattress -- it would be the exact same product in either case. The only bearing it would have is on Purple's cost structure. So the only reason for a consumer to care is if they are deeply concerned about how much it costs to actually make a Purple mattress relative to the price. |
