Bob, that is a great question. You won't find much about that out there because there isn't much that I have seen. The best offense is a good defense, and the same goes for memory foam pillows. There are a host of good pillow protectors out there, such as these pillow protectors. Pillow protectors nowadays are breathable and yet waterproof. The biggest culprit to foam is moisture, and in our sleep we sweat around our head. A good protector will prevent moisture from accumulating in the pores of the foam. It will also catch all the dead skin cells and dust as well. It is removable and washable. You NEVER want to wash a memory foam pillow, and its probably best not to wash the cover. You can always put it out in the sunshine for a few hours, as sunlight kills bacteria, fungus. Dust mites are another thing that can accumulate in a pillow. Dust mites need food and water, which would be dead skin cells and moisture. A protector keeps these things out. Hope this sheds some light.
