For the last 10 years, mattresses have been made one sided....that is to say, finished on one side. The underside is usually much firmer and not made for comfort. However, many of my customers have added a latex topper to the underside of their one-sided mattresses. This provides firmer support and the latex topper provides long lasting comfort. Something to consider when the money you spend on a mattress seems to be wasted when the top layers compress so easily. The 2" soft Talalay model works best for most people.
