Also see our overview of the Beautyrest collection (the company's entry-level beds), the Beautyrest Black line (the company's luxury mattresses), the Beautyrest Silver collection and the Beautyrest Hybrid line (its memory foam mattresses) for 2019-2020.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Mattresses: Shared Features

The new-for-2020 Harmony Lux collection replaces the Beautyrest Platinum collection, which we also covered. We expect shoppers will continue to see the Platinum mattresses available throughout the year as they are gradually replaced by the 9 models in the Harmony Lux series.

The 9 mattresses in the Harmony Lux collection are further divided into the Carbon and Diamond series, and that's how they should be identified in stores (though you probably won't see all nine models at every store).

The two levels share many of the same features, with the main difference being the addition of more memory foam and a different color cover. All of the models are compatible with adjustable bases.

Prices start about about $1,099 (queen size) ranging up to $1,999.

Sustainable fibers in mattress covers

New for the 2020 model year, the Harmony Lux mattresses share a unique cover that features polyester fibers made from recycled water bottles. A company named Seaqual makes the fibers from plastic waste collected at sea by fishermen. The company buys the plastic from them, essentially paying them to help clean plastic from oceans.

Once cleaned, the plastic is made first into pellets, then spun into a fiber that can be used to make fabric.

Each queen-size mattress cover recycles the equivalent of 50 water bottles. You can read more about the Beautyrest/Seaqual partnership on the Beautyrest website.

The covers of the Harmony Lux mattresses additionally feature functional side handles (helpful for rotating the bed). They also include a phase-change coating; this is a layer of microscopic wax beads that help give the cover a coolness to the touch.

Pocketed coil unit

All of the Harmony Lux models share the same pocketed coil support unit with 850 coils (queen size) and zoned support. In the middle third of the bed, firmer coils are included to better support the heaviest part of your body--your hips.

We discussed the company's T3 coils featured in the Beautyrest Black collection; these feature three wires twisted together, then formed into a coil. The Harmony Lux collection uses Beautyrest's T2 coils -- similar, but with two wires twisted together then coiled.

These T2 coils are super strong; they are used just in that middle third of the mattress, and are interspersed with standard single-wire coils.

Foams and memory foams

All of the models in the Harmony Lux collection include some memory foam, but the amount varies by series. In the Carbon mattresses, there's not enough memory foam to give them any kind of traditional slow-melting memory foam feel. The Diamond mattresses have more memory foam (between 2 and 3 inches more, depending on the model), and do have some that melting-into-the-bed feel.

(If you are interested in a Beautyrest mattress that has lots of memory foam feel, see our coverage of the Beautyrest Hybrid collection.)

A variety of other comfort foams are used to vary the softness (or feel) of each mattress. All models include the company's Right Temp foam either quilted into the cover or just below it. This foam includes carbon flecks, a known heat conductor that's meant to help regulate temperature.

All around the edge of each Harmony Lux mattress is a perimeter of firm edge-support foam, as you can see in the cutaway below.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Series

There are 5 mattresses in the Carbon collection, which vary in terms of softness and mattress height. We found that the softness names used by Beautyrest differed somewhat from what we would call "firm" or "soft. The Medium and Plush versions were quite similar in our view. While the Plush was slightly softer, if was not enough softer that we would have classified it softer than Medium Soft.

None of these mattresses contain enough memory foam to give them that melty feeling that some people like about memory foam.

Harmony Lux Carbon

GoodBed Softness Rating

Mattress Height Estimated Price
Extra Firm Firm 12.5" $1,099
Medium Medium Soft 13.75" $1,299
Plush Medium Soft 13.75" $1,299
Medium Pillow Top Medium Firm 15.75" $1,499
Plush Pillow Top Soft 15.75" $1,499

To illustrate the range of feels available, we took a closer look at the Carbon Extra Firm, which in our opinion felt like a Firm on our scale, with relatively shallow cushioning depth. The Carbon Plush Pillow Top, on the other hand, has lots of softness and deep cushioning, which we might call a Soft on our scale.

Without huge differences in materials and construction, your preferred feel is the main differentiator between models.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Diamond Series

The Diamond mattresses in the Harmony Lux line include more memory foam than those in the Carbon series. They are also taller, with the Plush Pillow Top version maxing out at a whopping 17.5".

In the Diamond series, you'll find some of Beautyrest's Micro Diamond memory foam, which includes flecks of heat-conducting diamond dust intended to help pull heat from the body. It's a very slow responding foam, and these mattresses have more memory feel than those in the Carbon series. They also differed slightly between their names and what we would classify them as in terms of feel, but there was more difference in feel between the Diamond models than in the Carbon series.

The Diamond mattresses are easily differentiated by the Carbon models because of their gray mattress cover.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Diamond GoodBed Softness Rating Mattress Height Estimated Price
Medium Medium Firm 14.75" $1,699
Plush Medium 15" $1,699
Medium Pillow Top Medium Firm 17.25" $1,999
