This is our plain-English explanation and overview of the new Beautyrest Black Hybrid Collection.

If you’d prefer to watch rather than read, check out our Beautyrest 2024 Black Hybrid Overview video above.

Summary: Beautyrest Black Hybrid 2024 Collection

In the fall of 2024, Beautyrest updated their Black Hybrid Collection with new covers, a new formulation of slow-responding memory foam, and subtle changes to the coil unit. This update replaces the outgoing BX, LX, CX, and KX nomenclature with a simpler naming convention in Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series One, Two, Three, and Four. Each level progressively adds new foams, features, and comfort materials.

First, let’s discuss the common features across the Black Hybrid Collection.

Shared Features in All Models

Triple-Stranded Coil

All Beautyrest Black mattresses use Beautyrest’s signature "Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil." This coil is found in both the Quilted collection and the Hybrid models in this article.

This had previously been called a “T3” coil, although in this generation Beautyrest has elected to instead use the phrase “Triple-Stranded" coil instead. This is a unique style of pocket coil that uses three strands of wire that are braided together to provide additional support and long-term durability. Beautyrest then alternates this Triple-Stranded Coil with rows of a more traditional, single-stranded pocket coil in varying gauges to create a wide range of firmnesses. The “Firm” and “Medium” models will generally use a firmer coil in those alternating rows, while the “Plush” options will generally use a softer one.

These also no longer have the zoned middle-third seen in the previous models.

Memory Foam

All of Beautyrest’s new Black Hybrids use some amount of memory foam. In the Series 1 models, this is a collection of Beautyrest’s classic memory foams, including Gel Memory Foam, Dynamic Response Memory Foam, and GelFeel Firm HD Memory Foam. In the image below you can see Beautyrest's Gel Memory Foam on the left and their Micro Diamond Memory Foam on the right.

In the Series 2, 3, and 4 models, however, Beautyrest is using a brand-new formulation of memory foam that they’re calling their "FORM HD Material." This is a very slow-responding memory foam with a lot of “melting-into-the-bed” feel that Beautyrest claims has three times the airflow of other types of memory foam. Beautyrest has positioned this right at the surface of the mattress in all of these models, although in some models it’s used in deeper layers, as well. Additionally, nearly all of these mattresses also use Beautyrest’s classic Micro Diamond Memory Foam directly over the pocket coils.

Sleep Climate Technology

All of the new Black Hybrids are built with stretch-knit covers with some kind of cooling technology. For those unfamiliar, cooling features are increasingly common in high-end mattresses, and typically reflect one of two kinds of materials: phase-change material and high-density yarns. Much like the Black Quilted Collection, the new Black Hybrid Collection actually makes use of both of these technologies. Phase-change material is used in Series One and Two and a high-density polyethylene-based yarn is used in Series Three and Four. We generally think these are thoughtful additions that can add a real sense of coolness to the mattress surface, although this sense of coolness is sometimes short-lived and may not last the entire night.

Beautyrest Black Series One

The Beautyrest Black Series One Hybrid models mark the entry-point to the Hybrid Collection. These replace the outgoing “BX” hybrids, although there are some subtle differences between these. All of Beautyrest’s Series One mattresses use their Triple-Stranded Coil, Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam, and have phase-change material (PCM) integrated into their covers.

There are three Series One Hybrids. You can recognize these by the charcoal-stripes on the covers.

Model Name Softness Cushioning Depth Memory Feel
Series One Firm Firm Slightly Shallow Medium-Low
Series One Plush Medium Medium Medium-High
Series One Medium Medium-Firm Medium Medium-High

Beautyrest Black Series Two

The Beautyrest Black Series Two Hybrid models build on the feel of the Series One models and add Beautyrest's new "FORM HD Material" and their classic Micro Diamond Memory Foam to their construction. These are two premium somewhat slow-responding memory foams with a lot of Memory Feel.

The Series Two Collection also includes a Medium Pillow Top with a unique design that Beautyrest is calling its “Apex Top.” This uses three inches of Beautyrest’s Gel Memory Foam with its own “High-Density Foam Encasement” to improve the structure and stability of this pillowtop. In other words, the memory foam of the Apex Top has a foam edge and perimeter much like the underlying pocket coils.

There are three Series Two models. You can recognize these by their light-red accents on the covers.

Model Name Softness Cushioning Depth Memory Feel
Series Two Firm Firm Medium Medium-High
Series Two Plush Medium Slightly Deep Very High
Series Two Medium Apex Top Medium-Firm Slightly Deep Very High

Beautyrest Black Series Three

The Series Three hybrids add a new cover with high-density yarns and an inch and a half of latex to all of the hybrids. If you’re unfamiliar, latex is a high-quality and durable material that’s been used in the industry for decades. It’s also very resilient and bouncy, and can thus effectively balance the “stuck” feeling that people sometimes experience with memory foam.

In addition to this, the Series Three Medium also adds a layer of microcoils to its construction. Microcoils are very small pocket coils that range from somewhat firm to super soft. In this case, the microcoils are extremely soft and comparable to a layer of very soft specialty foam. These add a bit of response and contour to the mattress.

There are three Series Three models. You can recognize these by their silver accents on the covers.

Model Name Softness Cushioning Depth Memory Feel
Series Three Firm Firm Slightly Shallow Medium-High
Series Three Plush Medium Deep High
Series Three Medium Medium Slightly Deep High

Beautyrest Black Series Four

Finally, the Black Hybrid Series Four models combine all of the previously mentioned features into two models. Both of these are “Apex Tops” with their own foam encasements; both have latex; both have a cover with high-density yarn; and both have two layers of microcoils. As a result, these are extremely tall mattresses. Both stand at about sixteen inches high. In terms of their feel characteristics, these both have a LOT of cushion and conformance.

There are two Series Four models. You can recognize these by their gold accents on the covers.

Model Name Softness Cushioning Depth Memory Feel
Series Four Firm Apex Top Medium-Firm Slightly Deep High
Series Four Plush Apex Top Medium Very Deep Very High

Who We Think These Are Best For

The new Beautyrest Black Hybrid Collection updates the Black Line with a brand-new formulation of memory foam and some totally new designs. We think that these are well-designed luxury mattresses that balance the pressure relief of memory foam with the gentle resilience of soft latex and microcoils.

In our opinion, the Series Two and Series Three models stand out as particularly good options. The Series Two models have a lot of Memory Feel and “melting-into-the-bed” sensation, whereas the Series Three models have a slightly blended sense of Memory Feel and responsiveness. We think that these would be great options for a wide variety of sleepers.

These are also one of the few mattress lines on the market that actively varies their coil gauge in different mattresses. This means that the Plush models tend to use a softer coil, whereas the Medium and Firm models tend to use a slightly firmer one. This can help people of very different sizes find a good fit for them. We generally think that the Plush options are most suitable to average and lighter-weight sleepers, whereas the Medium and Firm options tend to be better for average to larger than average sleepers.

Still, these are all fundamentally memory foam hybrid mattresses with a lot of Memory Feel. If you’re a person that dislikes memory foam, then these may not be a good fit for you. That said, we think the latex in the Series 3 and Series 4 models helps mitigate some of the qualities that people dislike in memory foam and we'd encourage most people to give these a try.
