There are 12 models in Beautyrest's revamped Black collection of mattresses. Here's our look at the series.

Note: This is not a review. This is our plain-English explanation and overview of the Beautyrest Black collection of mattresses for the 2019-2020 model year. Also see our overview of the Beautyrest collection (the company's entry-level beds), and the Beautyrest Hybrid line for 2019-2020.

Beautyrest Black Mattresses: Shared Features

The 12 mattresses in the Beautyrest Black collection are further divided into three classes: L-Class, C-Class, and K-Class, each with a range of feels and softness levels within them, and differences in materials.
But all Black collection models share some signature features.

T3 Pocketed Coils

Beautyrest is again using their signature triple-wire coils in the Black series. Three wires are twisted into a cable, which is then twisted into the coil. In the mattresses, Beautyrest alternates rows of the T3 coils with regular pocketed coils. The regular coils vary in gauge to help give a bed its firmness of softness. But all of the mattresses in the series employ the alternating coil system.

BlackIce 4.0 Cooling Features

The Beautyrest Black mattresses also a suite of cooling features that the company collectively calls 'BlackIce 4.0'.

First, there's phase change material on the top of the cover, and also a layer beneath the cover. Simply put, phase change material is similar to wax beads; the beads feel cool to the touch, and as your body warms them, they melt and lose their benefit. These materials are meant to keep you cooler while you fall asleep. With the BlackIce system, your body warms the top coating of phase-change material, but the second layer underneath is meant to keep the benefit going.

Beautyrest also includes silver flecks in the fiber, and uses something it calls "Silk Air" fiber in the quilting layer that's said be a more open weave to promote air flow. Silver is a conductor of heat, and is included as a temperature regulator.

Altogether, the company says that BlackIce 4.0 keeps their mattresses 2 degrees F cooler for up to 30 minutes. The more expensive C-Class and K-Class mattresses have some additional cooling features, but all mattresses have BlackIce 4.0.

Mattress Covers

All share charcoal gray side panels with sturdy, functional handles. The L-Class mattresses have a white top cover with gray highlights while the C-Class and K-Class beds have a charcoal cover with white accents.

Beautyrest Black L-Class

There are 5 models in the less costly L-Class mattresses. Again, all still include the BlackIce 4.0 cooling features, and Beautyrest's signature Black-series coil unit with T3 coils. Mattress heights range from about 14" up to close to 16" for the pillow top versions.

Comfort-wise, the firmest bed in this series replaces the Beautyrest Black Calista Extra Firm, which we've previously reviewed. We found this bed to be especially supportive for plus-size back and stomach sleepers, and this new version now has additional cooling features.

There's a small amount of memory foam in the Beautyrest Black L-Class beds, but only about 1/2" of it -- definitely not enough to give these beds any kind of memory feel. If you are looking for that slow, melting into the bed sensation, the K-Class has that (see further below).

Model Mattress Height Estimated Price
L-Class Extra Firm 13.75" $1,799
L-Class Medium 14.25" $2,099
L-Class Plush 14" $2,099
L-Class Medium Pillow Top 15.75" $2,399
L-Class Plush Pillow Top 15.75" $2,399

Beautyrest Black C-Class

Moving up price-wise, the C-Class series includes an additional cooling feature: Beautyrest's Right Temp foam infused with graphite, a known conductor of heat. The company says this improves cooling performance by 20% over the L-Class beds.

The L-Class mattresses also have more memory foam, about 2" total, so you do get some memory foam feel, but not like you will with the K-Class beds.

The C-Class mattresses include two tight-top (standard) beds that are about 14" tall, and two pillow-top versions that are about 16" tall.

For the extra money over the L-Class models, you're getting more memory foam and that additional cooling feature. The C-Class beds have a charcoal gray top cover.

Model Mattress Height Estimated Price
C-Class Medium 13.75" $2,699
C-Class Plush 13.75" $2,699
C-Class Medium Pillow Top 16" $2,899
C-Class Plush Pillow Top 16" $2,899

Beautyrest Black K-Class

There are three models in the K-Class mattresses in the Beautyrest Black line. The Medium is a tight-top traditional mattress, while the two others are pillow top beds.

The main extra feature over the C-Class beds is a layer of 2,000 2K Nano Coils. These are short, 1" coils sandwiched between memory foam layers intended to give extra conformance to the comfort layers of the mattresses.

The Nano Coils are enclosed in small pockets, and are created as a "sheet." When you see the K-Class models advertised, you may see "3,000 coils" and that's how they're getting there - 1,000 coils in the main pocketed coil unit, plus another 2,000 of the 2K Nano Coils.

More and Denser Memory Foam

The K-Class models also include more memory foam over the C- and L-Class beds, and that memory foam is more slow responding and higher in density. Practically speaking, that means you get the most of the slow, melting-into-the-bed sensation with the K-Class mattresses than with others in the Beautyrest Black collection. These mattresses, especially the pillow top versions, offer a lot of cushioning depth and conformance; you can see a comparison of the two below.
It's also worth noting that compared to the 2017-2018 versions, the mattresses in the Beautyrest Black K-Class have dropped in price. That's something we don't see happening very often, and we thought it was worth noting.
Model Mattress Height Estimated Price
K-Class Medium 14.5" $3,299
K-Class Firm Pillow Top 17.5" $3,699
K-Class Ultra Plush Pillow Top 18" $3,899
