Our Mattress Expertise
Nobody has more expertise in assessing or choosing a mattress than our founder, Mike Magnuson. Fortunately, you don't need to take our word for it — because no one else in the world can lay claim to his unique qualifications.
Mike's Unique Credentials
Hands-on assessments of over 800 mattress models from over 50 different brands.
Mike may have carried out more in-depth testing of a wider array of mattresses than any other person on earth. Since 2008, his tests have spanned every major brand, type, and combination of mattress materials. In all, Mike has personally completed evaluations of over 800 different mattress models. Included in this are over 300 unique mattresses that he has physically dissected in order to analyze their interior materials and construction. This unparalleled experience is the primary source of Mike's unique mattress expertise, and is a key reason why GoodBed's reviews are packed with so much more information than any other mattress reviews on the internet. To illustrate this point, the average length of our video reviews is over 25 minutes — twice as long as any other site.
Designed the GoodBed Testing Program™, the mattress industry's most comprehensive framework for evaluating product performance.
Before GoodBed, even intrepid product reviewers like Consumer Reports were unwilling to review mattresses, deeming them too personal and subjective for scientific testing. As an engineer, Mike saw the need for a mattress testing methodology that could be both objective and repeatable, and could be applied to any type of mattress. Through his years of hands-on testing experience, he developed a method for breaking down each mattress into its core fundamental characteristics — a set of 50 distinct and objectively measurable attributes that we call Mattress DNA™. This proprietary breakdown has become the basis for the GoodBed Testing Program™, the industry's first ever scientific mattress testing program — created together with Dow. As a marker of GoodBed's influence, the descriptive terminology that we developed to explain these characteristics to consumers is increasingly being adopted across the industry.
Created the first and most powerful mattress matching quiz on the internet.
Early on, Mike realized that the most common consumer questions he received were from people wanting to know which mattress he'd recommend, or what he thought of a particular mattress. The problem was that since mattresses are highly personal, it was impossible for him to provide an accurate universal answer to such questions. For a time, he got around this by consulting each consumer individually, however this was clearly too time-intensive to be a practical long-term solution. So, in order to be able to provide personalized mattress guidance at scale, Mike created the first online mattress matching quiz. This simple but powerful tool enabled any consumer to get personal guidance from Mike in just a few minutes, whether about products sold online or ones available in their local stores. Today, the GoodBed Quiz™ is powered by the most advanced mattress matching algorithm on the internet. In milliseconds, it can calculate a personal match score for any given sleeper on any given mattress — based on over 30 different factors about the person, and over 50 distinct characteristics of the mattress.
Collected direct feedback from over half a million real mattress owners (and counting).
GoodBed has received over half a million ratings and reviews to-date, making us by far the largest independent consumer review platform for mattresses. This gives us extremely unique visibility and insights into what delights consumers, what frustrates them, and how this is changing over time. In addition, our bespoke platform also collects key details about the sleeper that posts the review, affording us a much more nuanced understanding than anyone else can have as to how different mattresses and mattress types are experienced by different types of consumers. We use this information to inform both our product assessments and our matching algorithms.
Over 15 years of demonstrated commitment to integrity.
Mike founded GoodBed in 2008, making him affectionately known as the "O.G." of mattress reviews. Unlike the shady review sites that sprang up in 2014 and beyond in order to make a quick buck from the onslaught of online mattress sellers, GoodBed didn't even have a revenue model at first. Mike's first priority was to solve a problem for consumers — helping them make a better choice when shopping for a mattress. This distinction, coupled with GoodBed's well-known and unwavering commitment to serving the consumer with integrity ever since, has earned Mike unparalleled accolades from both consumers and journalists.
