This is our plain-English explanation and overview of Serta's new Perfect Sleeper X line of mattresses.

Summary: Serta Perfect Sleeper X Lineup

The Perfect Sleeper X line is a totally new line of mattresses from Serta. These models build on the entry-level Perfect Sleeper line and add more memory foam, a five-zone coil unit, and microcoils on some of the models. But first, let’s talk about the shared features across the line.

Shared Features across the Perfect Sleeper X Line

Cover

All of the new Perfect Sleeper X models have new covers with a deep blue color palette and phase-change materials built into the fabric. For those unfamiliar, phase-change material is a relatively new addition to the mattress industry that consists of microscopic wax beads that actively change phase in response to body heat and pull heat away from a sleeper. We typically think this is a thoughtful addition to most mattress constructions and can create a noticeable cool-to-touch sensation (at least for the first couple of hours). Additionally, the Perfect Sleeper X line is available in both quilted and smooth-top options.

Perfect Conform Memory Foam

All of the new Perfect Sleeper X models also use some amount of Serta’s new Perfect Conform Memory Foam. This is a graphite-infused memory foam with a somewhat slow-response and excellent pressure-relieving characteristics. All of the new models have at least an inch of this foam somewhere in their construction. We should also note that this isn't the only type of memory foam used in these mattresses - these also use Serta's classic Cool Twist Gel, EverCool Supreme, and Deep Reaction Memory Foams.

Coil Unit

Additionally, all of the mattresses in the Perfect Sleeper X line use the same coil unit. This is a five-zone “Quad Coil” design with a high overall coil density (1000+) and some unique features that distinguish it from other more typical pocket spring designs.

First, it’s made without a scrim sheet. If you're unfamiliar with this term, a scrim sheet is a layer of fabric that’s typically laminated to the top of pocket spring to help them maintain structural integrity and prevent coils from shifting or separating with use. However, having a somewhat inflexible fabric on top of the coils also limits their ability to function independently of one another and can prevent them from conforming to your body. The coils on Serta’s Quad Coil, however, are bonded together in packs of four (hence the name) and can thus maintain structural integrity without an overlying scrim sheet.

Second, the new Quad Coil unit is designed with zoned support. This means that certain areas of the mattress are “zoned” with slightly firmer coils to provide reinforced support to specific areas of a person’s body. In the case of the Perfect Sleeper X line, these are five-zone units with reinforced areas both at the lumbar spine and around a person’s thighs. We thought that the effect at our thighs was negligible, but the zoned support at our lumbar spine was noticeable and reassuring.

Microcoils

Finally, the Level 2 models in the Perfect Sleeper X line also have microcoils. These are very small pocket springs that actually function more like a comfort material than a support layer. When these are added to comfort layers, they add conformance and depth to a mattress and can mitigate the sense of getting "stuck" in slow-responding memory foams. They’re also very durable materials.

Who We Think These Are Best For

The Perfect Sleeper X line of mattresses is a solid addition to the greater Serta lineup. These are all well-built memory foam hybrids with both "traditional" quilted-top and more "modern" smooth-top options. This means that they should appeal to a wide-range of sleepers. Additionally, all of these models utilize Serta's new Perfect Conform Graphite Memory Foam (in addition to other types of memory foam), and the highly-conforming and supportive Quad Coil. We think that this five-zone system could be an excellent fit for people that carry extra weight at their waist or for anyone that likes the the idea of reinforced lumbar support.

The only people we’d steer away from the Perfect Sleeper X line would be those that don’t like memory foam and those that don’t like zoned coil units. Zoned systems don’t always agree with people, and while we think the zoning in the Perfect Sleeper X line is fairly subtle, some may not like this or have trouble finding optimal alignment. We should also add that the regular Perfect Sleeper line uses a different style of zoning - so if a five-zone system doesn't work for you, a three-zone system could still be a good fit. Otherwise, we think these are excellent options for most sizes and sleeping positions.
