This is our plain-English explanation and overview of Serta's new iComfort Pro line of mattresses.
Summary: Serta iComfort Pro Mattresses
The Serta iComfort Pro Line is a totally new collection of mattresses from one of the biggest names in the mattress industry. These share some similarities with the outgoing iComfortECO collection, but with a few major differences. First, all of the iComfort Pro mattresses have quilted covers. Second, all of the iComfort Pro mattresses use a significant amount of zoned latex to create a conforming and highly-responsive sleep surface. Finally, the top-of-the-line models in the iComfort Pro line have both latex comfort layers and latex support cores.
Shared Features across the iComfort Pro Line
Cover
All of the new iComfort Pro mattresses have quilted covers with white and blue colorways. Additionally, all of these are built with cool-to-the-touch fabrics that, in combination with the underlying latex layers, Serta is calling their CoolFeel Pro System. The cool-to-the-touch characteristics are accomplished with high-density polyethylene fibers that have a high heat capacity and actively draw body heat away from a sleeper. Additionally, many of these covers are also quilted with some amount of Serta’s Cool Twist Gel Foam.
Latex Comfort Layers
Every mattress in the iComfort Pro collection uses some amount of latex in their comfort layers. If you’re unfamiliar with latex, this is a type of foam created from either natural or synthetic rubber with a reputation for being one of the most durable materials in the mattress industry. In the case of the iComfort Pro line, this is 100% natural latex made with the Dunlop Process. Additionally, this latex has a subtle five-zone pattern with slightly firmer areas under the lumbar spine and around one’s thighs. This allows the latex to closely conform to a person’s body while allowing for more softness at body prominences like a person’s shoulders.
Foam Support Cores
The iComfort Pro mattresses all use some type of foam in their support layers. In the Level 1 and Level 2 models, this is a support core made of firm poly foam. In the Level 3 models, however, this is a support core made entirely of latex. This means that the Level 3 models are nearly 100% latex constructions except for an inch or two of poly foam in the quilt or at the very bottom of the mattress. In the case of the Level 3 Buckingham Plush Pillow Top model, that is approximately 13” of natural latex.
Level 1 Models
There are two models in the Level 1 Collection - the Granby Extra Firm and the Chelsea Medium. Each of these uses a total of two inches of latex (although note that the Granby Extra Firm does not have the Graphite-Infused Latex that is present in other models).
We thought that each of these mattresses was rather true to its name. We found the Granby Extra Firm to be a Very Firm on our scale, while the Chelsea Medium was around a Medium. Despite this, both had relatively shallow amounts of Cushioning Depth.
Model | Softness | Cushioning Depth |
Granby Extra Firm | Very Firm | Very Shallow |
Chelsea Medium | Medium | Medium |
Level 2 Models
The Level 2 Models add more latex to the comfort layers. Each of these models has four to five inches of latex. Additionally, the Medium and Plush models also have Cool Twist Gel Foam in their quilt layers. We also thought that the zoning of the latex layers came through a bit more prominently on these models. We noticed closer conformance at the lumbar spine and a bit more softness at the shoulder.
Much like with the Level 1 Models, we found these to align pretty closely to their stated firmness. The exceptions would be in the Dartmouth Plush Pillow Top, which we found to be around a Medium with a slightly greater than average Cushioning Depth.
Model | Softness | Cushioning Depth |
Ambrose Firm | Firm | Shallow |
Ambrose Plush | Medium-Soft | Slightly Deep |
Dartmouth Plush Pillow Top | Medium | Slightly Deep |
Level 3 Models
The Level 3 Models add more latex to the comfort layers AND have latex support cores. These are very close to what we would call an “all-latex” mattress, although they do use an occasional inch or two of poly foam in their constructions. And while some people might not want a synthetic foam like poly foam in a latex mattress, we actually thought that adding just a bit of poly foam balanced the springiness of the latex and made these even more comfortable.
We found that these models had even more Softness and Cushioning Depth relative to the Level 1 and Level 2 models. Additionally, the latex comfort layers and cores allowed for more conformance while still maintaining alignment.
Model | Softness | Cushioning Depth |
Kingston Firm | Medium | Medium |
Canterbury Plush | Medium-Soft | Slightly Deep |
Buckingham Plush Pillow Top | Soft | Deep |
Who We Think These Are Best For
We think Serta is doing something very interesting with the iComfort Pro line. This is the first time we've seen one of the largest manufacturers feature latex so heavily in one of its flagship brands. In short, we think that they're bringing the quality and durability of latex to the masses. Moreover, they’re doing so in a way that blends the positive qualities of latex with the familiar feel and comfort of a traditional quilted mattress.
We think that these would be excellent options for anyone looking for a responsive mattress with more of a feeling of sleeping on top of it rather than being stuck down in it, or anyone that wants a mattress made with highly durable materials that are likely to maintain their comfort life for many years. In addition, these would be great options for people that want a little more pressure relief at their shoulders and hips. These also cover a wide range of firmnesses and should work well for sleepers of many different sizes.
The only people we’d steer away from the iComfort Pro line would be people who are looking for a lot of memory feel in their mattress. Latex has a buoyant feel and is extremely quick-responding, quite the opposite of memory foam. So if you like memory foam, or just like a slow-responding type of feel, then other options would be a better match for you. Similarly, if you’re looking for an innerspring, then you might be better off looking elsewhere as there are no springs to be found here.
