This is our plain-English explanation and overview of Serta's updated iComfort (Foam) line of mattresses.

Summary: Serta iComfort (Memory Foam) Mattresses

Serta’s iComfort update adds new foams and zoned transition layers while keeping the classic comfort and exceptional pressure relief of memory foam. And unlike the last iComfort collection, these are all foam mattresses. In other words, the hybrid options have been removed and are now located in the larger Perfect Sleeper line. Let’s talk about the shared features amongst these models.

Shared Features across the iComfort Foam Line

Cover

All of the new iComfort (Foam) line of mattresses have stretch knit covers in striking blue and white colorways. These covers are also cool-to-the-touch by way of high-density polyethylene fibers. If you’ve read some of our other content then you might be familiar with these fibers, but if you haven’t, then you should know that polyethylene fibers are a unique kind of yarn with a high-density and high heat capacity. When you contact these fibers, they feel to the touch and actively work to pull heat away from a sleeper.

This cooling effect is noticeable, though it can be somewhat short-lived and typically works best in the first twenty to thirty minutes of contact with the mattress surface (typically when you're falling asleep).

Memory Foam Comfort Layers

Every model in the new iComfort (Foam) line uses some amount of Serta’s new “Perfect Conform Memory Foam.” This is a graphite-infused memory foam with a highly-conforming feel and a somewhat fast response. All of the Level 1 models have an inch of this memory foam, whereas all of the Level 2 models have two inches.

However, this isn’t the only kind of memory foam in the iComfort line. Serta also uses a few other types of memory foam including their classic EverCool Fuze Gel memory foam and Deep Reaction Max memory foam to vary the feel of these models.

Zoned Transition Layers

Additionally, all of the models in the iComfort (Foam) line now have a zoned transition layer. This is a five-zone sheet of poly foam with slightly firmer areas under a sleeper’s lumbar spine and upper thighs. In practice, this creates a subtle and conforming effect that feels supportive at the waist and slightly relaxed at the shoulder.

Of note, this is the same style of zoning as on their Perfect Sleeper X models, just accomplished in a slightly different way with a zoned layer of poly foam rather than a pocket spring core of varying coil gauges.

Foam Support Cores

All of the iComfort (Foam) models are all-foam mattresses with a solid poly foam core. However, whereas many foam mattresses use the same firmness of foam, Serta actually varies the firmness of their cores depending on the model.

In practice, this means that models like the Aveda Medium and Aveda Plush have nearly identical constructions in their upper layers, but nonetheless feel different by way of varying the firmness of their support cores. This attention to detail is somewhat rare in the mattress market, and will help soften the sense of deeper firmness for lighter sleepers. Additionally, the plush models also have reinforced edges that use a firmer foam perimeter to maintain edge support with the softer foam core.

Level 1 Models

There are five total models in iComfort (Foam) Level 1. All of these use an inch of Serta’s Perfect Conform Memory Foam along with other types of memory foam. Surprisingly, we thought that all of these had around the same sense of initial firmness - we put this at a Firm on our scale.

Where they differ, however, is in the deeper sense of Cushioning Depth. In other words, we think that these mattresses feel somewhat similar on initial contact, but then their unique characteristics come through as the foams gradually relax and contour to your body.

Model Softness Cushioning Depth Memory Feel
Elena Firm Firm Shallow Medium-Low
Aveda Medium Firm Slightly Shallow Medium
Aveda Plush Firm Medium Medium
Iona Medium Firm Medium Medium-High
Iona Plush Firm Slightly Deep Medium-High

Level 2 Models

There are two models in iComfort (Foam) Level 2. These each use two inches of Serta’s Perfect Conform Memory Foam and can be distinguished by their darker blue covers. We thought that both of these models had a bit more surface softness than the Level 1 models and had a lot more Cushioning Depth and Memory Feel.

Model Softness Cushioning Depth Memory Feel
Aspire Medium Medium-Firm Deep Very High
Aspire Plush Medium Very Deep Very High

Who We Think These Are Best For

The new iComfort (Foam) line offers a unique blend of pressure-relieving memory foam and zoned support in an all-foam mattress. Further, Serta has gone the extra step and designed with support cores that vary in firmness depending on the desired comfort level. This is a thoughtful bit of design, and should make these mattresses accessible to a wider range of sleepers. We sometimes find that foam mattresses can feel a bit "abrupt" as you contact the firm support core, and the variable firmnesses here should mitigate that and keep these comfortable for very light or very heavy sleepers.

We generally think that the iComfort (Foam) line would be a good fit for people that prioritize pressure relief and/or like an all-foam mattress. In addition to this, we think the zoned transition layer creates a bit of extra "room" at the shoulder, and would be well-suited to people with slightly broader shoulders or people that have sensitive shoulders.

The only people we'd steer away from this line would be people that don't like memory foam. All of these mattresses have some amount of Memory Feel, and if you dislike that somewhat slow-responding sensation, then these might not be the best options for you. Similarly, if you want a mattress with a lot of bounce or a fast overall response, then you might be better off looking elsewhere. There's really no bounce to speak of on these models.
