Our look at the Aurora Luxe mattress from Brooklyn Bedding
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is an update of an earlier version (which we reviewed here). It has some features in common with the prior version in that it's still a foam and memory foam mattress with a pocket-spring support base. It still has a number of cooling features. However, the foams are somewhate different, and the whole mattress has a firmer feel than the previous version.
it's available, as before, in Soft, Medium and Firm versions, but new for this version of the Aurora Luxe, you can add a Cloud Pillow Top option, which adds a very tufted and soft pillow top/quilt to the top of the mattress. We'll discuss how that changes the feel of the mattress further below. The Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress is about 13" tall, with the pillow top option add another inch or two.
While Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are available primarily online, the company does have a number of showroom locations. Brooklyn Bedding has a free delivery and trial period that matches most of its online-mattress competition. Also note that Brooklyn Bedding offers a substantial discount to active military and veterans, first responders, teachers, and students--worth checking out if you fit into one of those groups and decide that the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress is a good fit for your needs. (See the bottom of the Brooklyn Bedding website for special-group discount details.)
Temperature regulation is a real highlight of the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe, and if you have a history of sleeping hot, or perhaps experience hot flashes or other temperature-related issues, the Aurora is worth a close look. The high-density polyethylene fibers in the cover really do feel notably cool to the touch, plus its coil unit has no foam surrounding it, meaning hot air can easily travel out the side of the mattress while cooler air can flow in. The newer version has a different cover design, with a sturdy tape edge rather than the previous version's waterfall edge, which in our opion makes the newer version feel more firm.
Ease of repositioning was also very good; our tester had no trouble moving from position to position. Edge support was also good. While sitting on the edge was not the very best, laying on the very edge felt extremely stable — a consideration if you find yourself pushed to the very edge or your bed by kids or pets. We did find the cover to be a little slippery, which did impact edge support in that we felt a little sliding.
Brooklyn Bedding offers a 10-year warranty with a 1-inch body-impression depth, so any significant breakdown in the bed's foams should be covered under that policy, giving consumers peace of mind.
You can place the Brooklyn Aurora mattress atop the support of your choice, including a separately purchased box support (a proper support is required or you can void the warranty), a bed frame, platform bed, or adjustable bed frame. Brooklyn Bedding does sell its own box frame, metal frame, and adjustable base, but none of these are required purchases.
This overview covers the Brooklyn Aurora mattress, a hybrid bed made of foam and memory foam over pocket springs, and with several specific features to keep you cool. We have also provided our review of the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress, a less expensive hybrid bed made with foam over pocket springs.
The “feel” characteristics of a mattress cannot be universally better or worse.
They can only be more or less desirable to you, based on your personal preferences.
For this reason, we call these “preference-based” attributes.
Our ratings here are based on objective measurements that we apply to a consistent scale for products from all
brands.

Compared to the prior versions, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora, now the Aurora Luxe, keeps getting firmer. The last version was a Medium on our scale, and now it's a Medium Firm. That's neither here nor there if you are buying this mattress or the first time. But if you have owned a prior model and are expecting it to feel the same, it's going to feel firmer.
Getting the Cloud Pillow Top option also effects the overall softness a little bit, making it just a notch softer for each model in our estimation.
In terms of cushioning depth--how deeply you sink into the bed--this generally tracks right along with overall softness. We did not find that adding the Cloud Pillow Top made much difference to cushioning depth. It was more or less the same either way.
Memory Feel
We look at memory feel -- also called responsiveness -- in two ways. First, we examine how quickly a mattress springs back after being depressed, then we take a look at bounce qualities. Since the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress includes only one layer of pretty quick memory foam, we were not surprised to find that it had hardly any of that slow-responding melting quality of memory foam. Rather, the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress sprung back into position quickly.
Bounce
As for bounce, we would expect some springiness due to the layer of pocket springs, and that was indeed the case. There is some surface bounce owing to the springy CopperFlex foam, the plenty of deeper bounce when we plopped on to the bed. Our tester called it "peppy."
Motion Isolation
If you are sensitive to a partner's movements in bed, we don't think you'll be disturbed too much on the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe. And that's true whether you opt for the Cloud Pillow Top or now.
Edge Support
If you like to sit or lie on the edge of your mattress, edge support will be important to you. The coil unit of the Brookyn Aurora Luxe mattress has two rows of firmer coils along the long edges made for this purpose.
In our testing, edge support was pretty good. Interestingly, it was better on the softer version than the firm version (usually it's the opposite). Part of the reason it doesn't feel quite as stable, in our view, was the cover, which felt a little slippery.
Ease of Repositioning
Our tester did not find that moving from position to position was problematic on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe.
Back Support
The key to good back support is for the mattress to support your spine in a “neutral”
position while you sleep,
meaning that the shape of your spine is roughly the same as when you're standing.
The ability of any given mattress to do this will vary by sleeper,
depending on its “fit” for your weight, body shape, and preferred sleep position(s).

Pressure Relief
Inadequate pressure relief from your mattress results in “pressure points,”
which can be a source of pain, soreness, loss of circulation, restlessness, and other problems.
Pressure relief requirements will vary be sleeper, with side sleepers needing the most.
Likewise, the amount of pressure relief that a given mattress provides will also vary by sleeper,
depending on its “fit” for your weight and body shape.

Performance Features
With the “features” of a mattress, performance will tend to be consistent across all sleepers –
without regards to your body type or preferences.
However, these attributes have differing levels of importance to each sleeper,
which is why we consider them “priority-based” characteristics.

Materials & Construction
What's in a Brooklyn Aurora Mattress?
Overall, we classify the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress as a "Foam and Memory Foam over Pocket Spring" construction type, and it's about 13.5" tall altogether.
Three types of foam comprise the bed's comfort materials. Depending on whether you choose the Firm, Medium or Soft version, the three foams are in a different order.
CopperFlex: This is a high-density manufactured foam that's very beefy and springy, with a quick response, meaning it regains its shape very quickly after being depressed. As you might guess by the name, it includes flex of copper, and also gel. Both are known conductors of heat, intended to help draw heat from the body to keep you from feeling hot and sticky.
Soft Supreme Response Comfort Foam: This is another high quality, high density foam that feels a lot like the CopperFlex foam, but without the copper and gel flecks.
Gel Swirl Memory Foam: This is the only true memory foam in the mattress, and it's swirled with more heat-conducting gel. The foam does have some delayed response, meaning it takes a while to come back to its shape. However, it really does not have that really slow, melting quality we associate with memory foam, and none of these three mattresses give you that melting-into-the-bed sensation.
Supporting the foam layers is an 8" pocket-spring unit with a total of 840 coils in a queen size. This is a zoned-support unit, meaning there are thicker/heavier springs in the central third of the mattress under your hip area, designed to give the heaviest part of your body a little extra support.
The Aurora Luxe mattress also has two rows of narrower coils running along both of the long sides of the bed, meant to give the mattress some extra edge support.
Lastly two 3/4" transition layers of foam nestle between the primary comfort foams and the coils, and again at the base of the coils.
Cover + Cloud Pillow Top Option
The cover on the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress is a cooling cover; about half of its fibers are made of high-density polyethylene fibers. These fibers are inherently cool to the touch, much in the way that marble just feels cooler than wood. The company calls it GlacioTex, and it really does feel cool -- in fact it's one of the coolest covers we have ever felt.
New for this year's version of the Aurora Luxe, you can add a pillow top. Brooklyn Bedding calls it the Cloud Pillow Top. Made with the same cooling fibers, this cover option has about two inches of very soft foams quilted right into it, giving it a LOT of loft and puffiness. It also does change the overall softness a bit.
Durability, Warranty & Value
The “value” of any mattress is both subjective and personal –
reflecting how well it meets that person’s unique sleep needs and preferences,
relative to their budget.
As a result, our ratings in this area are focused on more objective factors like quality and longevity.

How Much Does a Brooklyn Aurora Luxe Mattress Cost?
One of the biggest, if not THE biggest complaints about any mattress from consumers regards body impressions—the inability of a mattress to spring back, eventually creating a low spot/sinkhole in the mattress. As such, mattress warranties all contain a term defining how big a sag or ‘body impression’ (measured when no one is on the mattress) is considered a defect, and thus covered under the warranty. The industry standard for mattresses is generally between ¾” and 1.5”, and Brooklyn Bedding has gone with 1.5". Practically speaking, that means any softening or sagging would need to be at least that deep before the warranty would offer you protection. See: Brooklyn Bedding warranty policy.
