Beautyrest Black Mattresses: Shared Features
The 16 mattresses in the Beautyrest Black Quilted collection are further divided into four classes: B-Class, L-Class, C-Class, and K-Class, each with a range of feels and softness levels within them, and differences in materials.
In terms of features, these models have similar names and materials to the Beautyrest Black Hybrid mattresses, which we also cover. Overall, the hybrid versions have more of that ooey-gooey memory feel than the regular Beautyrest Black collection.
All Black Quilted models share some signature features.
T3 Pocketed Coils
Beautyrest is again using their signature triple-wire coils in the Black series. Three wires are twisted into a cable, which is then twisted into the coil. In the mattresses, Beautyrest alternates rows of the T3 coils with regular pocketed coils. The regular coils vary in gauge to help give a bed its firmness of softness. But all of the mattresses in the series employ the alternating coil system.
It is worth noting that Beautyrest counts each of these T3 coils as three coils due to their construction. A queen-size mattress has 1260 coils total. Around the perimeter of the bed is a 4" foam piece, intended as additional edge support.

BlackIce Cooling Covers
The Beautyrest Black mattresses feature cooling technology called BlackIce, comprised of phase-change material on the top of the cover. Simply put, phase change material is similar to wax beads; the beads feel cool to the touch, and as your body warms them, they melt and lose their benefit. These materials are meant to keep you cooler while you fall asleep.
Notably the phase-change beads are made of plant-based canola oil rather than petroleum.
All of the Beautyrest Black mattresses share the BlackIce cooling cover.
All share charcoal gray covers with functional handles. All of the covers are deeply quilted, which gives them a very traditional look and feel. Each mattress has about 3/4" of gel memory foam quilted right into the cover. It's a very soft, slow responding foam that you can really feel.
Lastly, the covers all contain some cashmere wool fibers, which have natural moisture-wicking properties, plus an antimicrobial treatment to help keep the mattress fresh.
Beautyrest Black B-Class
The entry-level mattresses in the Black collection are the four models in the B-Class line. These share the same pocketed spring support unit and phase-change cover as the other Black quilted models, but the B-Class doesn't have as much of the phase-change material.
These mattresses also have Beautyrest's gel memory foam, but again, not as much of it compared to the higher up versions, with just about an inch of it, and not enough to give these mattresses very much of that 'melting' sensation we associate with memory foam.
The B-Class models are a more recent addition to the Black collection, with the intent of offering the signature features of the Black collection at a more affordable price. We have a separate video on them as well.
Here's how the four models break down on our softness scale.

There are four quilted-top models in the B-Class group. The Extra Firm version is indeed very firm. It's not quite the firmest mattress we've tested, but it's up there, and if you're after a really firm mattress without much "sink" at all, the B-Class Extra Firm may be worth a look.
The Medium version is a Medium on our scale too, with a blend of feeling like you are floating on top of your mattress and sinking into it. We could feel the memory form just a bit in this bed but still not enough to give much of that signature memory feel.
The Plush version is very soft, and has a lot of deep cushioning. It would be a good choice if you like to feel enveloped and cradled by your mattress.
The Plush Pillow-top, interestingly, was also a Medium on our scale, and again, not much memory feel.
All four have quite a bit of bounce owing to that coil unit. The edge support is a more mixed bad. On the Extra Firm version, edge support is exceptional. On the mattresses with more foams and softness up top, edge support isn't quite as good, but still good overall.
Beautyrest Black L-Class
There are 4 models in the less costly L-Class mattresses. Again, all still include the BlackIce cooling covers, and Beautyrest's signature Black-series coil unit with T3 coils. Mattress heights range from about 14" up to close to 15" for the pillow top versions. These are taller mattresses compared to the B-Class models.

There's a small amount of memory foam in the Beautyrest Black L-Class beds, but only about 1" of it -- definitely not enough to give these beds a lot of memory feel, but you can feel it a little bit. If you are looking for that slow, melting into the bed sensation, the K-Class has that (see further below).
All of these mattresses are quite bouncy; definitely above average in terms of bounce.
The Firm version definitely gives you more of a floating sensation, on top of the mattress, as opposed to the pillowtop versions, which have a lot more of that sinking-into-the-bed sensation.

Beautyrest Black C-Class
Moving up price-wise, the C-Class series includes some additional features intended to improve airflow and pressure relief. Each includes a 1/2" sheet of latex, pierced with pin-core holes, which allow for some vertical airflow. At the same time, latex has known pressure-relieving qualities.
A second cooling/comfort feature is a 1" layer of a spongy material made from natural alpaca wool, cashmere and sink blended with some synthetic fibers. This is a springy, airy layer that adds airflow and moisture-wicking properties.
The L-Class mattresses also have more memory foam, about 2" total, so you do get some memory foam feel, but not like you will with the K-Class beds.
For the extra money over the L-Class models, you're getting more memory foam and the unique wool and silk layer.
In terms of bounce, these aren't quite as bouncy as the L-Class models, as their additional comfort layers dampen bounce somewhat. Memory feel corresponds with overall softness, with the firmer versions having less, and the pillowtop versions having more. Cushioning also corresponds, so with the firm versions you get more of that floating-on-top feeling, with the pillowtop versions having lots of sinking-into-the-mattress feel.

Beautyrest Black K-Class
There are two models in the K-Class mattresses in the Beautyrest Black line, and both are pillowtops.
The main extra feature over the C-Class beds is a layer of 2,000 2K Nano Coils. These are short, 1" coils sandwiched between memory foam layers intended to give extra conformance to the comfort layers of the mattresses.

The Nano Coils are enclosed in small pockets, and are created as a "sheet."
The K-Class models also include more memory foam over the C- and L-Class beds, and that memory foam is more slow responding and higher in density. Practically speaking, that means you get the most of the slow, melting-into-the-bed sensation with the K-Class mattresses than with others in the Beautyrest Black collection. These mattresses offer a lot of cushioning depth and conformance.
