Beautyrest Beyond Mattresses: Shared Features

The Beautyrest Beyond collection of mattresses consists of three models. They are available exclusively at Mattress Firm, and represent the top-of-the-line Beautyrest models sold through that retailer.

The three mattresses in the collection share similar, thought not identical, construction and differ in terms of overall softness and memory feel. All are very tall mattresses, ranging in height from 14" to 15.25" -- that's a lot taller than a standard 10" or 11" mattress, so you'll need deep-pocket fitted sheets. And be aware of total mattress height from the ground once you add a foundation or box spring. The tall height does give these mattresses a luxury look that reminds us of a hotel-style bed.

Memory foams

The Firm, Medium and Plush Pillow Top versions all have three inches of memory foam as the primary comfort layer, though the exact type of memory foam differs between each model. In part this is how Beautyrest varies the softness of each model. In our evaluation, each had a very different 'memory feel' -- that is, how quickly you sink into the mattress, and how much of that slow, melting-into-the-bed sensation you get with each model.

Underneath the memory foam on each model is a 1/2" sheet of natural Dunlop latex, intended to provide some additional pressure relieving qualities.

Zoned pocketed-coil support units

All use the same pocketed coil unit for support, featuring 1,080 coils (queen size). Beautyrest calls this the Beyond Series 5X pocketed coil unit, with the '5' indicating five support zones. Beautyrest varies the firmness of the coils to correspond with these zones, which position the firmest coils underneath what would be your lumbar area, with correspondingly softer coils under the hips and at the head and foot. The zones are symmetrical, so you can rotate the mattress periodically to extend the life of the mattress.

In addition to the coils, the support unit includes a foam perimeter around the whole bed as edge support.

Quilted covers with antimicrobial features

All three models feature a quilted cover; right under that is what Beautyrest calls its BeyondCool Technology. These are fibers under the cover that include silver and silk. These have anti-microbial features as well as heat-conducting and anti-moisture properties.

All three mattresses include functional handles on the long edges of the bed, helpful when you need to move or rotate the mattress.

Prices start about about $3,300 (queen size) ranging up to $3,700.

Beautyrest Beyond Firm

The Beyond Firm is a 14" tall mattress featuring three inches of quick-responding Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam. Of the three models, this is one has the least amount of that "melting" sensation associated with memory foam. This foam springs back relatively quickly compared to the other two models. So if you want the pressure-relieving qualities of memory foam but don't really like that 'melting into the bed' feeling, the Beyond Firm has those qualities.

While Beautyrest calls this a Firm, we actually found it to be more of a Medium on our scale, and in fact, we found the Beyond Medium (below) to have a more firm feel than the Beyond Firm.

The Beyond Firm has a different and tighter quilting pattern on the cover, which does give it more surface firmness and contributes to more of a feeling that you're floating on top of your mattress rather than sinking into it.

Beautyrest Beyond Medium

The Medium mattress in the Beyond collection is 14.5" tall. While it still has three inches of memory foam, it's a different type of foam that the one featured on the Firm version. This time it's Beautyrest's Dynamic Response Memory Foam, and it's definitely a slower-responding foam, with more of that 'melting' feeling as your body warms the foam and begins to sink.

Because of that slower memory foam, we found the Beyond Medium to be very conforming -- that is, as you warm the mattress, the foam lets you sink in while it fills in around your curves. At the same time, we found this to be more of a Medium Firm mattress on our scale.

The Beyond Medium mattress has a looser or wider quilt pattern, adding to conformance and giving it a heavily quilted/tufted feel on top.

Beautyrest Beyond Plush Pillow Top

The pillowtop mattress in the Beyond series includes yet a different three inches of memory foam, this time Beautyrest's Air Cool High Density Memory Foam. This is Beautyrest's densest, highest quality memory foam. It's the softest in the collection, and we judged it a Medium Soft on our softness scale. It also has the most conformance and most cushioning, so if you really enjoy feeling like you're sinking deeply into your mattress, the Pillow Top version has the most of that sensation.

The Beyond Plush Pillow Top has an additional cooling feature under the cover compared to the other two. It shares the same silver and silk fibers, but adds a coating of phase-change material. This can be thought of as microscopic wax beads that take longer to warm to your body heat. The idea is that these beads stay cooler longer while you are falling asleep.

The Beyond Plush Pillow Top measures 15.25" tall, definitely the tallest mattress in the collection.

Beautyrest Beyond Hybrid Cooling Pillow

While obviously not a mattress, the Beyond series includes a specialty pillow that we could call the "Swiss Army knife" of pillows due to its customization features -- something we don't often see in a pillow.

The pillow is filled with layers of down-alternative, latex, and memory foam, and as you can see in the photo below, you can access the layers of the pillow. That allows you to pull out and rearrange the layers to your liking for a thinner pillow or a thicker one. As shipped, the mattress is two-sided, with memory foam at the top on one side, and latex on the other. That lets you pick which feel you prefer.

Further inside the mattress, there's another layer of memory foam that can be pulled out, and there's a sort of mini pillow filled with a down alternative that can also be removed if desired.

In addition, the pillow as a bunch of cooling features. It's first off using the same silver and silk fibers found in the Beyond collection mattresses. On top of that, you have the inclusion of high density fibers. Much in the way that a higher density substance like marble feels inherently cool to the touch compared to a less dense material like wood, the high density fibers give the pillow a subtle coolness to the touch.

Lastly, the foams in the pillow are perforated, allowing air to travel through the foams, potentially keeping you a little cooler as well.

Pricing for the pillow is about $199, and it's available in standard queen plus king sizes.
