Summary: Beautyrest Black 2024 Collection
New to 2024, Beautyrest’s flagship Beautyrest Black Collection has been updated with new materials, new fabrics, and a wide range of firmnesses. This update replaces the B, L, C, and K Lines with a much simpler naming convention in Beautyrest Black Series One, Two, Three, and Four. Each level has some unique features that we’ll discuss below.
First, let’s discuss the features common across the Black Collection.
Shared Features in All Models
Triple-Stranded Coil
All Beautyrest Black mattresses use Beautyrest’s signature "Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil."
This has sometimes been called a “T3” coil, although in this generation Beautyrest has elected to just use the phrase “Triple-Stranded" coil. This is a rather unique pocket coil that uses three strands of wire that are braided together to provide additional support and long-term durability. Beautyrest then alternates rows of this signature coil with other more traditional, single-stranded pocket coils in different gauges to create a wide range of firmnesses and fine-tune overall comfort. For reference, the “Firm” and “Medium” options will generally use a firmer coil, and the “Plush” options will generally use a softer coil.
These also no longer have the zoned middle-third seen in the B, L, C, and K-Class models.
"HD" Foams
Additionally, all of the new Beautyrest Black mattresses use Beautyrest’s high-density “HD” foams. Higher-density foams tend to last longer and perform more consistently than lower-density foams, and the adoption of “HD” foams in all Black models is significant. This is a clear improvement from the last generation, which used lower-density foams on some models.
(Note: In order to provide consistent information across products from all mattress brands, GoodBed has developed internal criteria for determining what constitutes an HD foam. Any foams that meet these standards are labeled as HD foams on our site. In cases where the manufacturer uses the HD terminology but we do not, the “HD” is shown in quotes.)
Sleep Climate Technology
All of the new Black models have some kind of cooling technology. For those unfamiliar, cooling features are increasingly common in high-end mattresses, and typically reflect one of two kinds of materials: phase-change material and high-density yarns. The new Black Collection actually makes use of both of these technologies with phase-change material used in Series One and Two and a high-density yarn used in Series Three and Four. All models at all levels also use a vertically-oriented fiber layer to add airflow and breathability. Beautyrest is calling the combination of these features “Sleep Climate Technology.”
Beautyrest Black Series One
The Beautyrest Black Series One models mark the entry-point to the Luxury Collection. These replace the outgoing “B-Class” models (although they don’t necessarily map directly to these models). All Series One mattresses use Beautyrest’s Triple-Stranded Coil, "HD" foams with Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam, and phase-change material (PCM).
If you're new to mattress shopping, phase-change material (PCM) is a relative newcomer to mattress technology. This uses yarn that's been infused with a high-tech material that actively changes phase in response to body heat and thus draws heat away from a sleeper. It's commonly used in many high-end mattresses on the market, although the cooling sensation from this material can be somewhat short-lived and may not last over the course of an entire night. Still, it's a thoughtful addition and creates a sense of coolness to help you fall asleep.
There are six Series One models. You can recognize these by the charcoal stripes on the quilted covers.
Model Name | Softness | Cushioning Depth |
Series One Extra Firm Tight Top | Very Firm (2) | Shallow (3) |
Series One Medium Tight Top | Medium (5) | Deep (7) |
Series One Plush Tight Top | Very Soft (8) | Very Deep (8) |
Series One Firm Pillow Top | Medium-Firm (4) | Medium (5) |
Series One Medium Pillow Top | Medium-Soft (6) | Slightly Deep (6) |
Series One Plush Pillow Top | Very Soft (8) | Very Deep (8) |
Beautyrest Black Series Two
The Beautyrest Black Series Two models have all the features of the Series One collection with the addition of two types of memory foam: SurfaceTouch Gel Memory Foam in the quilt and Beautyrest’s signature Micro Diamond Memory Foam in the upholstery layers. Each model has about an inch and a half of the SurfaceTouch Gel Memory Foam in the quilt - we thought this added a surprising amount of surface softness. There’s less of the Micro Diamond Memory Foam (about a half inch), but this layer adds a lot in terms of heat mitigation, as the "diamond" additive helps absorb heat and create a cooler sleeping surface. Together, these additions add a little more softness and nuance to these models.
There are five Series Two models. You can recognize these by the light-red accents on the quilted covers.
Model Name | Softness | Cushioning Depth |
Series Two Firm Tight Top | Medium-Soft (4) | Medium (5) |
Series Two Medium Tight Top | Medium-Soft (4) | Medium (5) |
Series Two Plush Tight Top | Soft (7) | Deep (7) |
Series Two Medium Pillow Top | Medium (5) | Slightly Deep (6) |
Series Two Plush Pillow Top | Very Soft (8) | Very Deep (8) |
Beautyrest Black Series Three
The Series Three models add a new cover with a checkered pattern and an inch and half of latex to all models. If you're unfamiliar, latex is a high-quality and highly durable material that’s been used in the mattress industry for decades. The previous Black collection also used some latex, although in those models it was significantly less - closer to a half an inch. We see the addition of more latex as a good thing that’s likely to add years of consistent comfort to these models.
The new cover is also a bit different than the covers used in the Series One and Two models. Whereas those used phase-change material (PCM) to create a cool sleeping surface, the Series Three (and Four) models use a high-density yarn with an inherent "cool-to-the-touch" property. The way we usually like to explain this is with a marble surface. Consider how a marble surface feels in terms of "coolness" to a less dense surface like a wooden table. The denser marble has a much higher heat capacity and thus feels cooler. This sense of coolness means it's actually pulling heat away from person's body.
The Series Three Pillowtop models also add microcoils to their constructions. In this case, these are very small microcoils sometimes referred to as “nanocoils.” These are super-soft coils about the width of a quarter and in a very high overall coil-count. In practice, these coils function like a soft, high-performance foam that adds both contour and airflow. These also help balance mattress builds with lots of comfort foam and help the comfort layer to align with a sleeper's body.
There are six Series Three models. You can recognize these by the checkered cover with silver accents.
Model Name | Softness | Cushioning Depth |
Series Three Extra Firm Tight Top | Very Firm (2) | Shallow (3) |
Series Three Firm Tight Top | Firm (3) | Slightly Shallow (4) |
Series Three Medium Tight Top | Medium-Firm (4) | Medium (5) |
Series Three Firm Pillow Top | Medium-Firm (4) | Medium (5) |
Series Three Medium Pillow Top | Medium (5) | Slightly Deep (6) |
Series Three Plush Pillow Top | Soft (7) | Very Deep (8) |
Beautyrest Black Series Four
The Beautyrest Black Series Four models contain all the features mentioned previously (the Triple-Stranded Coil, the checkered cover with high-density yarns, the addition of latex, etc) and add even more nanocoils and more comfort material. All of these models have two full layers of nanocoils. Depending on the size, this means that a given mattress may have as many as 4,000 of these coils. These add a lot of cushion and conformance and create a durable and luxurious sleep surface.
All of these models also have a lot of memory foam. In addition to the 1.5” of memory foam quilted into the cover, all of these have at least 3” of memory foam in the upholstery layers. This adds even more conformance and comfort to these mattresses. Of course, the addition of all these layers means that these are very tall mattresses - each model in the Series Four Collection comes to just over 17 inches high.
There are three Series Four models. You can recognize these by the checkered cover with gold accents.
Model Name | Softness | Cushioning Depth |
Series Four Firm Summit Pillow Top | Medium-Firm (4) | Medium (5) |
Series Four Medium Summit Pillow Top | Medium-Soft (6) | Deep (7) |
Series Four Plush Summit Pillow Top | Soft (7) | Deep (7) |
Who We Think These Are Best For
There are a lot of options in the new Beautyrest Black Quilted Collection. We think these offer significant improvements over the outgoing B, L, C, and K-Collections and are certainly easier to understand with clearly labeled Series One, Two, Three, and Four. We’d actually recommend these to most sleepers. These cover a wide range of firmnesses and, in our opinion, have one of the best coil units available. And while the new "HD" foams don't quite meet our internal definition of what constitutes an HD foam, these are nonetheless a step-up from the previous generation and better than most brands on the market.
The only people we’d steer away from the new Black Collection would be people looking for smooth-top memory foam hybrids or all-foam models. And even there, we do expect Beautyrest to update their smooth-top hybrids later this year. We should also mention that we think that the Plush models might be a little bit softer this time around, so if you’re coming from a legacy Beautyrest Black Plush, then that might be something to keep in mind. Otherwise we think these would be great options for most sleepers.
