The Avocado Eco Organic is a 10" latex hybrid from Avocado that maximizes organic features and affordability whilst still delivering the quality you’d expect from the Avocado brand. It’s very similar in construction to the original Avocado Green with a few subtle differences.
First, it is markedly less expensive than the Avocado Green. Despite using many of the same high-quality materials (including the same layer of GOLS-certified organic latex), the Avocado Eco Organic is, at the time of this review, almost eight hundred dollars less in a Queen size.
Second, though both models start with a 2” layer of soft organic Dunlop latex, the Eco Organic is a bit simpler in its construction. To start, it omits the hand-tufting seen on the Avocado Green and instead uses a stretch-knit cover. This allows the feel of the soft latex layer to come through just a bit more on this model. It also uses a slightly different coil system produced in-house by Avocado. This new coil unit still targets a medium overall feel, but does so without the zone of reinforced coils seen in the middle third of the mattress on the Avocado Green. It also simplifies the edge support by only having rows of reinforced coils at the long edges of the mattress and eliminates the inch of base foam underneath the Avocado Green’s coil unit.
The combined effect of these changes is a similar, though slightly softer, overall feel. We thought that the Eco Organic came in around a medium firmness, though edging slightly towards a medium-firm. It is also distinctly a latex mattress with both the rapid response and bounce associated with latex. For those unfamiliar, latex is one of the most durable materials used in bedding (with some latex mattresses reputed to last upwards of 20 years) though it is very different than polyfoam or memory foam in feel. As a result, latex mattresses can sometimes feel slightly firmer than comparable mattresses and typically do not have the ”slow melting-into-bed” sensation of memory foam.
Our tests also showed solid edge support (though again keep in mind that the reinforced perimeter coils are only present at the sides of the mattress), and excellent performance on an adjustable base.
The Eco Organic also boasts a number of environmental certifications regarding its quality and sustainability. It uses certified organic latex, certified organic cotton and wool, minimizes the use of glues that may produce VOC’s, and is Greenguard Gold certified – meaning its off-gassing is rated as safe for use in hospitals and child-care facilities. Avocado also produces a comprehensive environmental impact report on a semi-annual basis.
In short, we think the Avocado Eco Organic is an excellent choice for people looking for a mattress made of quality materials with organic certifications at a reasonable price-point. We believe it’s best for back and stomach sleepers that prefer a mattress without an excessive “sinking-in” feel. It might be a bit too firm for most side-sleepers, though spinal alignment was still preserved in these positions.
The layers of the Avocado Eco Organic mattress are wrapped in a soft cover made of organic cotton and wool. The cotton is GOTS-certified organic. The wool is there for its moisture-wicking properties and also as a fire barrier, as it wraps around the entire mattress, not just the top. The cover felt like a soft, thick sweater to us.
It's worth noting that the cover includes functional handles -- not always a given these days. The handles are very helpful for moving this 94-pound (queen size) into position and rotating it to even out wear.
Comfort & Feel
There are three aspects that make up our assessment of comfort and feel. We call these "preference-based characteristics" because no rating here is better or worse – rather, the attributes that are most desirable to you will be determined solely by your personal preferences. We apply the same classification standards to each mattress so you can more easily compare apples to apples.
Keep in mind that what mattress companies call “firm” or “soft” is a purely a preference. All mattresses should be supportive and promote healthy spinal alignment. Whether a mattress is fluffy and squishy (what mattress companies call soft or plush), or less so (what companies call firm), is purely down to your personal needs and preferences.
We classify the Avocado Eco Organic as a Medium on our scale, though it's pretty close to a Medium Firm.
Not sure what softness is best for you? Take our Mattress Match Quiz and find out.

This refers to how deeply you sink into the mattress or feel cradled or hugged, versus a feeling of floating on top of the bed. The Avocado Eco Organic mattress has just slightly deeper cushioning than the average mattress, but not by a lot. You do get a little more of a sinking-into-the-mattress feeling rather than floating on top.

Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress recovers its shape after being compressed. When you press your hand into the mattress, for instance, then remove it, does it take several seconds for the mattress to return to flat, or does it recover immediately?
There is no memory foam in this mattress, so there is none of that slow-responding "melting" feeling of memory foam. The latex at the top of the Avocado Eco Organic bed springs back immediately.
We also took a look at bounce. This is where we noticed the pocket springs responding from below. When our tester dropped his weight to the bed, he bounced several times before settling. In addition, latex is a springy material, so some of the surface bounce comes from that.

Back Support & Pressure Relief
The two things that you should always be sure to get from your mattress are spinal alignment (commonly thought of as "back support") and pressure relief. Unfortunately, no mattress will deliver these two things equally well for all sleepers. In particular, spinal alignment and pressure relief capabilities will vary across sleepers with different weights, body shapes, and sleep positions. To help you determine how this mattress will perform for you, we break down our spinal alignment and pressure relief assessments by sleeper type.
We found the Avocado Eco Organic mattress to be excellent in this respect when in back and for most stomach sleeping positions. We felt that regardless of body weight, most people would have the same support and spinal alignment when back sleeping, and that stomach sleepers of average weight and lighter would also be well served. Heavier stomach sleepers might be better off on the Avocado Green mattress, which is a little firmer.
For side sleepers, we think the Eco Organic is a good to very good choice, but it really shines for back and stomach sleepers.
Spinal Alignment
The key to good back support is maintaining proper spinal alignment while you sleep. This means that the mattress should hold your spine in roughly the same position it's in when you're standing. The ability of a given mattress to do this will generally depend on your weight, sleep position, and body shape.
Here is how we break down the spinal alignment of the Avocado Green mattress:

Back Sleepers:
Our 200-pound tester felt this mattress to be exceptional while on his back, with almost ideal spinal alignment. And we felt that most people would have the same experience and excellent spinal alignment in this position. Our tester felt his hips sink just the right amount into the mattress, and felt excellent support in his lumbar area.
Side Sleepers:
Spinal alignment for side sleepers was more challenging on the Avocado Green mattress. The same firm support that was so helpful for back and stomach sleeping could be a bit too firm in the side sleeping position. Even so spinal alignment for side sleepers was good to very good, and for occasional side sleepers or combination sleepers, we think it would perform well.
Stomach Sleepers:
Achieving good spinal alignment for stomach sleepers can often be trickier as the hips can tend to sink down too far with some mattresses, but our tester felt very well supported in this position. Further, we felt that most stomach sleepers would have a similar good experience on the Avocado Eco Organic mattress, but those on the heavier side might also consider the Avocado Green mattress, which has just a bit more firmness.
When a mattress pushes back against your body with too much force in a concentrated area, the result can be pain, soreness, loss of circulation, excessive tossing, and other problems. In general, such "pressure points" are of greatest concern for side sleepers, since that's the position in which your body's weight is distributed over the smallest surface area. To find the right mattress for your needs, keep in mind that the pressure-relieving capabilities of any given mattress will vary depending on the sleeper. Factors like your weight and body shape (e.g., broader shoulders and/or hips) will determine how far you sink into the mattress, and the pressure relief offered by that mattress will vary widely at different depths.

Latex has a good reputation for pressure relief, but in the case of the Avocado Eco Organic bed, there's just two inches of soft latex foam, then you reach the firm support coils. That means that side sleepers and those who need good pressure relief could find this mattress to be too firm.
If you sleep only occasionally on your side, or don't have acute pressure relief needs, the standard Avocado Eco Organic mattress might be adequate for your needs.

Other Features
Beyond the preference-based characteristics of comfort and feel, and the body matching for spinal alignment and pressure relief, a mattress will have a number of other attributes that can make it a better or worse choice for you. We call these "priority-based characteristics" because they are areas in which a mattress can be better or worse, but that will have differing amounts of importance to each sleeper. So, determining how much importance to give to these features will be entirely a matter of your own personal priorities. As always, we apply the same ratings standards to each mattress so you can more easily compare apples to apples.
With a bowling pin standing upright on the Avocado Eco Organic bed, we tested motion isolation by dropping a 16-lb. bowling ball on it, as well as the whole weight of our 200-lb. tester. In both drop tests, the bowling pin wiggled but did not fall.
That makes it a good choice for those that are easily disturbed by a partner, kids or pets jumping onto the bed or changing positions.
It's worth noting that the wool layer under the cover doesn't stretch very much, so when a person gets in bed, you can feel some pulling of that wool layer. It's not a serious disturbance in our opinion, but worth noting.

For those who tend to sleep hot, or for those that experience hot flashes, temperature is a concern. The Avocado Eco Organic mattress has a number of features that we think promote heat dissipation and air flow. First, this is a relatively firm mattress, which means your body doesn't sink deeply into it. That means more of your body is exposed to the air.
Second, the majority of this bed is springs, and air can travel freely around springs, allowing hot air to move away, and cool air to replace it. Next, the Avocado bed's cover includes wool, which has heat-regulation and moisture-wicking properties. Lastly, the latex is pierced with pin-core holes, while allow for air flow through the latex layer.
Taken altogether, we think that the Avocado Eco Organic mattress will not feel hot to most people.

If you tend to sleep right on the edge of your bed--or you tend to get pushed there by kids or pets, then edge support will be important. A mattress with good edge support means more usable area for sleeping and sitting.
Edge support was excellent with the Avocado Eco Organic. There is a double row of firmer coils along the long sides of the mattress to give it extra edge support. This is great for laying on the edge of the mattress.
Note that there are no edge support coils on the shorter sides of the mattress, so if you tend to sit on the foot of the bed, that's worth noting. But overall, edge support is excellent.

Ease of Repositioning ( what’s this )
Another highlight in our testing was exceptional ease of movement on the Avocado Eco Organic mattress. Changing from position to position was virtually effortless, and the latex actually seems to help you as you move since it has inherent springiness.

For mattress shoppers concerned with the use of natural materials, sustainable manufacturing practices or the like, we offer our subjective evaluation of any efforts taken by the company to make the mattress more green, healthy, or safe.
We have already talked quite a bit about the exceptional environmentally friendly materials and safety certifications awarded to the Avocado Eco Organic mattress. To sum up, the latex is both 100% natural and certified organic (GOLS), meaning that it is made from organic rubber trees. As with all certified organic latex, this latex is made using the Dunlop method, which avoids the small amount of chemical processing that is required to make Talalay latex, the other predominant manufacturing method. Next, the steel used in the pocket springs is recycled (and would be recyclable when you dispose of the mattress eventually).
The cotton used in the cover is USDA organic and GOTS-certified. Likewise, the layer of wool directly underneath the top cover of the mattress is also GOTS-certified organic wool. This layer serves as a natural fire barrier, and thereby avoids the use of any chemical fire retardants in the mattress.
This mattress has certifications for almost all of its materials to ensure that no harmful off-gassing, odors, or other potential issues are present. And the entire mattress is certified Greenguard Gold, meaning its off-gassing is rated as safe for indoor use in hospitals and child care facilities.
We did notice a small amount of glue used to hold together the fabric pockets that encase the springs, but overall, if you want a mattress that is as "green" as possible without breaking the bank, the Eco Organic, and really the entire Avocado lineup, is worth consideration.

Adjustable Base Compatibility ( what’s this )
If you plan to use your mattress atop an adjustable base, the Avocado Eco Organic bed is an excellent choice. Right out of the box, it conformed well to our adjustable base, and we noted no bulging, bunching or other issues.
Even when we got off the bed in its bent position, it held its shape wonderfully. As you can see in the photo, there's some bunching of the quilt layer, but the fabrics are so soft that we did not find this bothersome or uncomfortable at all.

Warranty
- Warranty Length: 10 years
- Indentation Coverage: 1.5” and above
One of the biggest, if not THE biggest complaints about any mattress from consumers regards body impressions — the inability of a mattress to spring back, eventually creating a low spot/sinkhole in the mattress. As such, mattress warranties all contain a term defining how big a sag or ‘body impression’ (measured when no one is on the mattress) is considered a defect, and thus covered under the warranty.
The industry standard for mattresses is generally between ¾” and 1.5”. Avocado has chosen to cover indentations that meet or exceed 1,5”. Practically speaking, that means any softening or sagging would need to be at least that deep before the warranty would offer you protection. Given the high quality of the materials, we expected to see a better guarantee here, but as noted, 1.5" is the industry standard. See: Avocado warranty policy.
