Are horsehair mattresses washable?

Are horsehair mattresses washable? Are they safe for people with horsehair or other animal allergies?

Seen 4,520 times Last updated May 2014

One Answer:

I would be reticent to wash any mattress. Keeping a protective, breathable, waterproof cover on the mattress at all times is the best practice.

As for allergies, most horse hair or animal allergies emanate from the dander on the pet, the tiny flakes of skin. Once horse hair has been washed and cleaned for use in a bed, there should not be an issue with allergies.
