When Is the Best Time to Buy a Mattress?
Top Holidays for Mattress Deals

Last updated on June 22, 2019

These days it seems like every holiday has a mattress sale. We've looked into the data to determine when is actually the best time of year to buy a mattress.

When is the best time of year to buy a mattress?

Holidays are touted as the best time to save money on mattresses. While there is some truth to that, the reality is that not all holidays are equal and the best holidays for one retailer may be different than the best holidays for another.  Each mattress retailer tends to choose a few time periods, spread throughout the year, during which they offer their deepest discounts, as well as other times in which they offer lesser discounts.

Here is a list of the holiday sale periods used by mattress retailers, in order of when they appear on the calendar. Note that while almost mattress retailers offer special deals at some of these holidays, very few will offer discounts at all of them.

  • New Year’s (early January)
  • Martin Luther King Jr (mid-January)
  • Valentine’s Day (mid-February)
  • President’s Day (mid-late February)
  • Tax Day (mid-April)
  • Mother’s Day (early-mid May)
  • Memorial Day (late May)
  • Father’s Day (mid-June)
  • Fourth of July / Independence Day (early July)
  • Labor Day (early September)
  • Indigenous People’s Day / Columbus Day (mid-October)
  • Veteran’s Day (early November)
  • Black Friday / Cyber Monday (late November)
  • Year-End (late December)

Which holidays offer the biggest mattress discounts?

Traditionally speaking, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and President’s Day have been the most common choices for deep mattress discounts, with 4th of July, Black Friday / Cyber Monday, and New Year’s strong contenders as well. That said, eager to spread their sales out over the year, many bedding retailers have also added MLK Day, Veteran’s Day, and Indigenous People’s / Columbus Day to their discount calendar. And even non-work holidays like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Tax Day (April 15) can provide an excuse for a sale or special discount.

Of course, not all retailers want their promotions to be tied to holidays – some prefer instead to assign sales periods to a season – think Spring Sale, Summer Sale, etc. – or a date that is special only to them (such as the anniversary of when they first opened for business).

Should I wait for a holiday to buy a mattress?

The take-away here is that the biggest mattress sales aren’t exclusive to the biggest holidays. There are discounts and promotions happening throughout the year, and often they are as big or bigger than the savings you can get on the major holidays.
