PhD. Mattress believes that you deserve the best night’s sleep possible.  Finding you the right mattress is the key component of designing a sleep solution that is customized to you.  Doing what is right for the customer is the key, not selling a mattress.  This is a lesson that Mike McCord, founder and owner, was taught at a very young age working in his family business.

The McCord family have been in the retail business for almost 90 years.  Mike’s father, Glenn McCord, began working for F.W. Woolworth in Chicago in 1936 and was in the retail business for the next 60+ years.  Mike, his youngest son, grew up going to the store with his dad.  He was running the cash register, with his mom, when he was 6 years old and has owned retail businesses since 1977.  During this time, Mike got his first exposure to the mattress business from his father-in-law, Stewart Matter.  Mr. Matter had a full line furniture store in Ft. Wayne, IN and then moved to the west coast of Florida in 1977.  There he opened his first store of what has become Matter Brothers Furniture, one of the Top 100 Furniture Chains in America, on the west coast of Florida from Tampa to Naples. 

In 2001, Mike began working in the furniture and mattress industry for Ashley Furniture Industries and opened his first Ashley HomeStore in Louisville in 2003.  He grew that business to 6 stores in Louisville and Indianapolis.  Those stores were sold to another group in 2011.  Since then, Mike has owned and operated The Louisville Furniture Company, Art Van Furniture Evansville and Big Sandy Superstore Evansville since then.  Every one of these businesses helped Mike learn what works and what doesn’t in the retail mattress industry.

What Mike has learned over the last 60+ years is that if you treat people well, have quality products at fair prices and provide the best customer service you can, people will choose to shop with you.

Mike has taken all this experience and applied this to PhD. Mattress.  PhD. Mattress provides an exceptional in-store experience by taking the time to understand why someone may not be sleeping well and then, using a state-of-the-art diagnostic bed, measures each individual to find which mattresses will provide the right mix of comfort and support needed to achieve the best sleep possible.  Plus, a new mattress may not be the only product someone needs.  We also custom fit pillows, linens, and power bases to create a total sleep solution for you.

Mike has always been involved in the communities he has worked in.  Giving back to causes that help the community is a core value for his businesses.  In the past, his stores have donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, WHAS Crusade for Children, Home of the Innocents, Louisville Fire Department, Evansville Fire Department, and The Breeder’s Cup.  He has also donated a house full of new furniture to needy families at Christmas.  PhD. Mattress is currently evaluating new charity partners in Louisville.

Mike and his wife Pam have lived in Kentucky for over 40 years and raised their three sons here.  They now enjoy watching their 6 grandchildren grow and see their sons pursue their life goals.
