"Stuck in a Nest"

The first time I even sat on this bed, it was the most unusual feeling I have ever had in a mattress. It seemed to create an impresion and was difficult even to get up. I purchased this mattress for my guest room downstairs, hoping a new mattress would alleviate some of my discomfort from my replaced hip and mending torn rotator cuff. Boy, was I surprised when just after a week or so I had difficulty even turning over because a "nest" - indention seemed to be created which created difficulty in trying to get out of it. In the beginning I thought that maybe this was just me, so I had two other people to lie on the bed, who weigh considerably more than me (I weigh 122 pounds and sleep by myself), thinking that a heavier person might not have this difficulty. I made no comment to either - just wanting to get their impressions. They both said that it was so soft and they could never sleep on it (I had been originally told it would be considered medium firmness). They also mentioned that it was difficult to turn over, they felt they were in a "hole." I communicated with the store - one of Southerland's immediate customers - and learned the person I purchased it from was very ill and hospitalized. So I didn't want to bother him since I have two other beds (upstairs) I could sleep on and I only wanted a new mattress on this bed due the difficulty of having to wag ice packs upstairs for my torn rotator cuff every night. The older mattress which had been on the bed was 34 years old (!) and did not have the problems this brand new mattress has. This person from Mattress Express, Southerland's immediate customer, had been totally responsive to me when I was considering purchasing from this company, and after he recovered, he came out to examine the mattress himself. He said he could see the indentions and took pictures, which he sent to Southerland's sales rep who responded that the indention was not deep enough to warrant any adjustment. After three weeks, there should have been NO indention! The person from the store flipped the mattress over, trying to help me. This person informed me that I should be getting a call from the Southerland rep because I wanted this person to see and feel what everyone else was seeing and feeling, but after several months I have had no call. When I telephoned Southerland, the woman insisted that Southerland doesn't communicate with consumers- its ultimate customer! I was stunned. The mattress set is too short, too low, and clearly built without any quality control. Having been in the customer service and quality arena for decades, having published books on those genres, I find it unbelieveable that I am getting such indifference from Southerland. I don't believe the store was at fault here; I think Southerland built a flawed mattress set. After that first four weeks, I have not tried to sleep on the bed but have continued to sleep in the bed upstairs, which, though difficult to fter that day, I have not tried to sleep on it, but have been sleeping since that time on my bed upstairs. When the mattress was delivered and I lay on it while he was there, he acknowledged that unfortunately he had not had a chance to sit or lie on the mattress before it was packaged, and went directly to my house, rather than the store. But he acknowledged that he understood why I was dissatisfied.

Avoid Southerland products!

I live in a very small town where the ONLY furniture store sells nothing but Southerland mattress. I know that this company has a terrible reputation, but thought, "how bad can it be." Ha!!! My sofa is more comfortable than both the gel foam Omni-Tranquil for over $1000.00 or the Charlotte pillow-top.

Great Mattress good support

Great bed - awesome price. It is a very heavy mattress, they told us it has a bunch of pocketed coils so thats why it weighs so much. My husband never complains about his back anymore. The price was much lower than some of the other brands we were shown.....We are very yhappy

Awesome Mattress!!

I purchased this mattress originally for my guest room, because I wanted something nice but didn't want to spend a lot of money. It turns out that after a few nights on my name brand mattress, I realized the Southerland model was much more comfortable. We have moved the Southerland to our master bedroom and will soon buy another Southerland for the guest bedroom. I have had it for about a year, and it is the mattress I've ever owned!!

Bad Mattress

When this mattress was purchased in July of 2009 it was comfortable for about 6 months. We have now had it for two years (about a year and a half too long). Then we both started having back, shoulder, neck, hip and all over body pain. The is a poor quality of a mattress for $1200.00 plus dollars. The middle of the bed has a big hump and both sides where we sleep has big holes. I am only 105 lbs and my husband is 160 lbs so we are by far not too fat. Hope this helps to anyone that would want to buy this type of mattress. My advise don't buy this it is a P.O.S mattress.

sleeping like a log

This is my Daughter's bed that she got second hand. I am looking for this same mattress in a queen size. I would rather have this mattress than our duel number sleep bed. This mattress was made in 2001 and is still in perfect condition. I can not rate the value on this bed as we did not pay for the bed when we got it a couple years ago.

THE WORST MATTRESS AND SOUTHERLAND WARRANTY IS A JOKE

I purchased this mattress approximately 14 months ago. After about 3 months, it began to sink in the middle. When 2 people sleep in the bed, you literally have to hold yourself to the side to keep from falling on each other in the middle. The store I purchased the bed from raved about how the warranty was just as good as tempurpedic, 20 years for defects. When i started trying to contact the store and manufacturer, southerland sleep, i got bounced back and forth for months as they each passed the blame to each other about who would cover warranty issues. Eventually the store went out of business and i had no other option but to deal with the manufacturer. They had me take these ridiculous pictures of broomsticks and measuring tapes all over the bed, pictures of the box springs, which required me lifting the mattress that weighs 3 times what i do. When i sent the pics in, I recieved a letter back stating since they could not see a body impression in the mattress that they would not cover anything. I explained to them that there was no body impression, that it was only when people slept in the bed. I even went so far as to take a pic of someone laying in the bed where you could clearly see it was sinking. They said the only thing I could do would be to send them back the mattress on my own dime and let them inspect it at the factory. I paid $1500 for this mattress, it would cost nearly half that to have it sent back to the manufacturer, I would have no bed to sleep on, and I have no guarantee that they will agree to give me a new mattress. I would never buy a mattress from Southerland. We will see what they say when they receive a letter from my attorney!!!

Worst Mattress Ever!

The poorest constructed mattress I have ever had the misfortune of owning. The mattress sunk in over 3 inches in less than a month. My wife and I both had horrible back and leg pain from sleeping on this horrible pos. The box spring/foundation also squeeked like crazy and sagged. My wife and I are of normal weight. I wouldn't recommend a Southerland to my worst enemy.
