I have back problems, have had for years. I bought the most firm mattress Southerland makes. I have to have really firm, I can't sleep on anything else because of the aforementioned back problems. The mattress slept great for a little over a month, but after that it went quickly down hill. With loss of firmness, a sunk in spot in the middle section. I read the directions that came with the mattress, I turned it around it every other week or so. You can't flip it, it can only be spun. I only sleep on it I never set on it, use it to watch TV or anything else. And my back hurts worse after a sleeping on it, than any other mattress I've ever had. It sleeps great for like a month or two, and then the memory foam, starts collapsing. And offers no support at all. And good luck trying to return it or getting your money back. I had never heard of this brand before, that day when I walked into the store. And yes I did lay on their samples they had in the store. But like I said mine felt great for a few weeks, and so did the displays they had in the store. But it doesn't last, and you will be sorry for buying this mattress brand. I wish I had read the reviews of this mattress before I had bought it. They all say pretty much the same as my review, lesson learned. I will never buy a mattress again without reading the online reviews first.
This bed appears to be supportive but it did not take long before I was tossing and turning to relieve soreness in shoulders, back and hips. Side sleepers be warned. It also holds heat so you will be sweating constantly. Do not purchase this mattress if you are a side sleeper. You will get soreness.
My Southerland Essex mattress started to dip/sag in the middle and sides almost immediately after buying. No support whatsoever, It’s almost 1 year old and I am throwing it away. Goodbye to $1700. Funny how the floor model in showroom was so comfy and supporting. I honestly don’t think they are the same mattresses in the showroom versus what they are selling to the public. I wish someone from the company would respond to some of these one star reviews!
The mattress was fine for about 3 years and then began to sag. Having hip and back issues, this became problematic rather quickly. in the end, I had to grab the side and pull myself out of the pit of the sag! I've spend hundreds at the chiropractor getting adjustments to compensate for the pain the mattress caused.
The edges broke down on both sides in a month and the stitching came undone from one side to the other. There’s a big wrinkle all the way across! We’ve shown this to the store we bought it from and they said they were getting in touch with manufacturer. We have to call him and he always says he hasn’t heard from southerland. This mattress was no good when we bought it, a rip off, and we’re on a fixed income! I’ll never buy another Southerland!
For the first year or so, this mattress was fine. After that it only went down hill from there. No support on the edges of the mattress. The gel/memory foam remembers every person over 150 lbs who sleeps on it and there are indents in the foam that when you try to sleep any other way than on your back, causes great pain, while the center of the mattress, where no one usually sleeps, is higher than the right and left side.
This mattress is very poorly made. I weigh 125, sleep alone and I have to rotate mattress at least once a month due to the hole it makes where you are sleeping. Also, I now see that I paid twice the mrp. Buyer beware.
Terrible Mattress, terrible longevity, poor customer service
We bought this mattress for our 15 y/o son from a school fundraiser.
It developed body impression the within the first year but was barely less than 1.5 inches so they would not warranty it out. Now after 3.5 years it has become about 2.25 inches and they finally warrantied it out, however we now have to pay $220 for freight charges for the new mattress after waiting nearly 3 weeks for warranty approval. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Warranty is a rip-off. If they stand behind their product they would ship for free. Be sure and read the fine print.
As of today I have on my mattress for three weeks, I have called the store I purchased it from they said they would call me back they never did I am so upset with my mattress I sick in the middle like a pot hole in the street !!!something is not right I told the sales person the same thing he said he would exchange it But failed to call me back I bought it at sleep well padding in Parma, OH 44129
