USDA Organic
According to the USDA, the word "organic" is a labeling term that indicates that a given agricultural product has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Certification as of USDA Organic products is overseen by the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP).
National Organic Program testing is done on individual components, not on finished products. In practice, the USDA Organic logo means that a specific mattress model contains at least some material (most often a textile, but possibly latex) that originated from an organic crop, according to USDA Organic standards. Because NOP certification does not address any processing or treatments, it can NOT be used to imply that any finished mattress product has an organic status that is certified by the USDA.
The National Organic Program was developed by the USDA in collaboration with members of the organic community appointed to advise the USDA on substances and other regulatory topics. Its objective is to ensure the integrity of USDA organic products in the U.S. and throughout the world. Certification under the National Organic Program can be obtained through third-party agents around the world that are authorized to certify operations to USDA organic standards.
