GOTS

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) aims to define a universal standard for organic fibers (eg, wool and cotton) -- from harvesting the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, to labeling -- in order to provide credible assurance to consumers.  A GOTS-certified material has undergone thorough inspections throughout the supply chain to ensure that they are both organic in raw materials as well as made with environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing practices and without harmful chemicals.

Mattress manufacturers should only use the GOTS logo to indicate that they themselves are a GOTS-certified organic processor of fiber and textiles -- meaning that their factory has been certified to manufacture organic mattresses and bedding under the GOTS standard.  The GOTS standard requires that all fiber and fabrics, with limited exceptions, must be made from certified materials that meet the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) standard and are processed in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).  All other components (such as innersprings, fire protection, etc.) must meet stringent non-toxic standards.  Becoming a GOTS-certified factory entails regular inspections by GOTS certifiers.

GOTS certifications must be obtained from an authorized GOTS certifier.  Some of the more well-known GOTS certifiers include Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO) and Control Union (CU).

GOTS is overseen by an international working group comprised of four industry associations -- namely OTA (USA), IVN (Germany), Soil Association (UK) and JOCA (Japan) -- together with other international stakeholder organizations with expertise in organic farming as well as environmentally and socially responsible textile processing.
