My husband and I purchased our first foam mattress, excited about the comfort and lack of motion sensitivity. Upon delivery of our Serta iComfort Insight, we noticed a noxious odor once the plastic came off the mattress. We were told by the delivery men that it would go away by nightfall. . . Well, it did not, and we spent every day airing the room (in cold weather), washing the sheets, walking on the mattress to release the odor, and, to no avail. I have a sensitivity to chemicals, so I was taking precautions with my meds every night before going to bed. When I spoke with the Serta rep he said that they recommend leaving the mattress in an open airy space for 2 to 3 weeks before sleeping on it. . . Hm, no one in the store told us that! When asked what chemicals were in the mattress, he said it was proprietary info. After telling him I would make a video for utube demonstrating the processs needed to sleep on the mattress, he put me on hold and then came back with some info - boric acid, which, according to him, is also in apples that we eat every day - so safe! Does he realize that it is also in rat poison? . . . We continued to vent the room, wash the sheets, and use our ionic air purifier for a month. I kept waking with a clogged head, sinus drippage, and then I started getting leg cramps in the middle of the night. Our retailer took the mattress back after a month, and we exchanged it for a Simmons foam mattress, which we were assured did not have an odor. . . It does. It's going back.

Eileen - sorry to hear about this issue you experienced. We can assure you that all Serta mattresses are 100% safe for our customers, our employees and the environment. There are no harmful chemicals used in Serta mattresses. We would be happy to put you in touch with our head of engineering for a more detailed discussion about how our products are made as well as your specific situation so we can put your mind at ease. We do hope your retailer was able to assist you in getting a replacement mattress that works for you. If you'd like to discuss this further, please email us with your contact information (https://www.serta.com/contact/).
really? please provide a detailed list of what your mattresses are made of. Your failure to do so will be taken as a retraction of your 100% safe guarantee. - Sick Icomfort owner - until they come back for it.
Please email us (https://www.serta.com/contact/) with your contact information, and we will have someone from our engineering department contact you to discuss the exact components of the mattress you own and to best answer your specific questions. You may also get details on the build of your iComfort mattress by visiting www.icomfort.com and selecting the Models tab, then selecting your specific model.
I have had my iComfort for nearly 8 weeks and my wife and I have not experienced the fumes that you referenced in this review. I am getting a great nights sleep.
Noxious....not owning an Icomfort...still looking into it, that's why I am here reading these reviews...after reading yours, I am thinking the smell is not totally from the mattress but possibly from the store you bought it from since both the Icomfort AND the Simmons mattresses had a smells...two different mattresses, one store. The store may have a problem with storage (mold?) so might be using chemicals to clean the area that has since seaped into the mattresses...just a theory.
I don't think it was the store. The Serta rep told me that the mattress needed 'airing' for a considerable time. My understanding is that the memory foam can off gas for long periods of time, and if you are sensitive to the odor, it's not the mattress for you. . . The Simmons had a different odor that was activated by sleeping on the mattress. As the foam compresses, it off-gases.. . We were told that even inner spring mattresses made today all have layers of memory foam that have the chemicals that off-gas. We ae looking into a 100% natural latex mattress with organic cotton and wool cover padding. Our retail store manager was extremely helpful and understanding in resolving the issues with both mattresses.
These reviews are so conflicting I don't know what to think. I have a chronic pain condition and was really hoping one of these I comfort bed would help. What a disappointment.
I bought the iComfort Insight and I love it. I have no idea what "smell" this person is talking about. I have had no such problem with the mattress. It smells fine and I wake up feeling better than ever. There's my two cents.
I just bought an icomfort insight--my husband (bad sense of smell) doesn't notice the chemical/plastic smell. I hate the smell. I liked the bed in the store but after sleeping badly on it for last 4 nights, I think we need to exchange it. I hate the smell and find it uncomfortable--makes me feel 'stuck' in bed. HATE IT. If you are at all sensitive to chemical odors, avoid this bed.
I've had my iComfort Insight for a week. It didn't smell. It is firmer than in the store but I don't think it's uncomfortable. I'm hopeful it will loosen up. If it doesn't and I don't get used to it, I'll by a memory foam topper! We also bought the adjustable base which is very nice.
I am finding the smell very hard to deal with too. Ours has smelled of mould, we've had it for a month now, I will try to air it outside.
We have had our bed for a month, left it outside while floors were refinished in the house for 10 days,no smell what so ever.it is smaller, sheets don't fit.it is a bit firm, but my back feels much better. I never feel my husband move in the bed and I'm no longer rolling to the center with a sagging mattress. All in all 8/10 rating here.
My wife and I just had our first sleep in this mattress and woke up with terrible headaches. The mattress in the I comfort pillows have a strong odor. I suspect the fumes or odor is the source of our headaches.
I was in a bad MVA and bought this bed as I was told it's great for injuries. I was so excited when it was delivered and was told in store that this bed didn't 'off-gas'(lie). I have had this bed in my bdrm with patio doors open, 2 windows open PLUS a fan running non stop for over a week and the smell is still unbearable. My husband and I have yet to sleep on it because I've been trying to air it out the best I can because it's really nauseating. Tonight I attempted to sleep on it for the first time(after almost 'airing' for 2 weeks)and I feel dizzy, sick and getting a headache. I'm not someone that is overly 'sensitive' to harsh smells but holy smokes this bed is too much. Looks like I'll be sleeping elsewhere in the house until I can replace this mattress. I can't speak of its comfort as it's too freakin smelly to even sleep on! If I could, I'd get a refund and buy an organic mattress but I cannot so I'll be looking for the least 'toxic' mattess I can from the store we bought it from.
We bought a cool sense serta mattress from sleepys in Sept. 2012. We too had an issue with smell. Did the same as other reviewers. Had windows open for two weeks, walked on the mattress and put a fan in the room. We exchanged the mattress for a box spring, but the mattress smell continued to permeate our bedroom. We had bought a new Crate and Barrel bed made of unfinished teak. The whole bed smell s like the mattress. We just had our rugs cleaned and I can still smell it. I also called Sealys to find out what the ingredients are in the mattress and got the same answer "that information is proprietary". I talked to an indoor air specialist who wanted me to get a material safety data sheet from Sealys which would list the ingredients, but Sealys claimed that they did not have such a thing. I'm worried too as to what chemicals are in the mattresses. I was told by the salesman that these mattresses are manufactured in China. I'm not sure what kind of regulations they have in China. Very worried about what is floating around in our bedroom. We also did not dare sleep on the mattress. Way to noxious. We also returned it and ordered an organic mattress from another distributor.
I need a new mattress and was considering an icomfort prodigy mattress. My daughter has this bed (pruchased nearly 10 months ago) so I asked if I could try hers out while she and her husband were on vacation. My daughter claimed that she did not notice any excessive chemical smells even when the mattress was new. I do have some chemical sensitivities - and I did NOT notice any off-gassing fumes when I laid on the bed. Although I loved the comfort level of this mattress and, I woke up with a a slight headache, felt a little off balanced, and suffered severe brain fog which lasted for most of the day. This was the same for all three days of sleeping on this "comfortable" icomfort prodigy mattress. As soon as I was sleeping back at home in my 10 year old coil spring mattress these symptoms dissapeared. I guess I won't be purchasing an icomfort mattress. I wish I knew what is in these beds that make some sensitive people sick - then I would know what to look for (or avoid) when making a new mattress purchase.
I recently purchased a Serta mattress and was assured the same thing of the Boric acid. I have had symptoms that range from brain fog, to congestion with bloody mucus, to sore throat, all the way to headache and constricted air way. All of these symptoms happened to start the morning we woke up from the first nights' sleep. I called up at Serta and a woman named Michelle in Customer Service says "not to down play "my" symptoms, but I could just coincidentally be ill"...it has been over a week and they have just gotten worse so to you, Michelle, I say it is coicidence that my "illness" dispates when I leave my apartment only to return when I come back home...? So to see if this was just maybe an illness (after I went to the ER for constricted airway) we bought a vaporizer- to no avail. Then tried a humidifier- nope. So finally today we steamed the mattress, doused it in Lysol, and jumped on it. Hopefully that works, because after a week of almost no sleep I am a little cranky. I am hoping that we do not have to get an organic mattress because they cost a fortune we just don't have right now!!
The odor is not from the store as we also just had an incomfort savant delivered and it arrives sealed in plastic from the factory. It immediately starting filling up the room with a noxious toxic smell. We also immediately started getting headaches, sore throats, and lung congestion...now on day three we are still having the same symptoms when we wake up and the smell has not gone away. We had to have our windows open all day in subzero temperatures just to try to air it out...and while the smell has decreased a little, its still noxiously there and we will be leaving the windows open again...great on the heat bill here in the northeast. We don't have much option then to deal with it and feel awful, as our bed was taken away and we can't return it for 3 weeks.
I bought the I comfort Savant and also noticed the chemical smell. It has now been 3 weeks and I feel as though the smell has gotten better, but still there. And at times it does make me feel sic to my stomach. But that being said the smell does not bother my husband at all. I do find it much more comfortable than the old innerspring mattress that I had before, but slightly harder to get out of bed in the morning. That is probably due to my age and ability to move around. I to am hoping the smell goes away. I did not notice the smell in the store when trying out the Serta mattress. I also would like to say that I bought the Serta waterproof mattress pad, and another good quality padded mattress pad. Both were washed and dried and do not smell, but I can still smell the mattress through two pads and bottom sheet. Serta I wish you had some answers to this problem.
What does consumer reports have to say ? Almost bought a coolsense today, now I will investigate further.
My husband and I purchased an icomfort savant mattress and it was delivered 3 weeks ago. The chemical smell is terrible. You would think the smell would be gone by now........but no, it is not. We put a mattress cover, bottom sheet, top sheet, 3 blankets between us and I still can smell the chemicals. We air the mattress out every day with the windows open and a fan running. I don't know what else to do to make the smell go away. What chemicals are in this mattress????? I am a breast cancer survivor and I pray whatever chemical is in this mattress is not a carcinogen!!!! How do I find out what is in this mattress?????
we bought a SERTA mattress the 23rd of February and I have been so sick ever since. the week we got it I came down with what the doctor said was Flu. Bronchitis, and strep all at the same time. I had to have steroid shots and am keeping an inhaler too. I am very sensitive to chemcicles and am having a very hard time with this it has disrupted my whole life. There are 7 people in our home and 2 others have had breathing problems and constant cough that gets better when we leave the house. This all started the week the mattress was purchased ...the bed felt great but I havent even been able to stay at ho,e. Going to move it out for ahwile and see if problems improve...so diappointed :(
Omg I just bought Icomfort pillows two days ago and they smell Terrible like chemicals these are so going back to the store and they will b happy i dont get legal advice and sue these people because this is ridiculous worse ever
I bought the Icomfort Insight and i am having the same issues with the fumes. I have had it now for 5 weeks and slept on it twice and felt very ill each morning. It has been in the bedroom wiht no sheets and windows open. I decided to take the cover off the matrress( it comes with the mattress) and it seems the fumes are much less on the bed-- but the cover smells horrible wiht all the noxious fumes. So thinking i might wash the cover and see how that goes.
We have had our Serta Savant for one week. On the morning after our first sleep we had pounding headaches and dizziness. We have been washing sheets and mattress covers, airing out the bedroom in very cold temperatures hoping the toxic odor goes away. We have found the mattress comfortable, but for the price, and the inconvenience of trying to tolerate it. I'm not sure it is worth keeping. With all of the engineering that went into the product, I can't believe it was put on the market without field testing it. The off gases are intolerable- a most noxious odor, still there one week later.
purchased 2 Icomfort pillows yesterday and they two smell horrible! the company I purchased them from gave me a special phone number to call and I have yet to hear back. has anyone had any resolve to the noxious fume issue?
June 2013 Just bought the I-comfort Insight and was overwhelmed by the odor. It is hard to describe, but the mattress just smells rotten or sweaty. I don't understand this concept of "airing out" a mattress, which is what Serta (called the 800 #) said to do. Why doesn't the factory have some way to do this. Certainly this can't be the first impression they are hoping for consumers to have? I have to be honest and say that my back aches after sleeping on it. The one in the store felt great; this one is doing something to my shoulders that is very painful. Between the pain and the odor, I'm not sure why I spent $1,500 for this!
I am happy I came across this blog, because I thought I was going crazy. I bought the iComfort mattress and found it fairly comfortable, although the odor was definitely present. It wasn't overwhelming and I feel that it is slowly disappearing. However, I bought the iComfort pillows as well, and they are outrageously odorous!!! Each night I sleep on them I wake up with more and more issues. I cannot breathe throughout the night and this morning I woke up with stiffness in my chest that gets worse with deep breaths. Something is wrong with these things!! Stay away!
I'm leaving an update to my comment dated February 11, 2013, the smell and physical symptoms you feel from the smell do go away. Probably about two months after receiving the mattress the odors and bad feelings were gone. If you have the space, store the mattress someplace airy for a couple of months and keep using your old mattress in the meantime. We are very happy with this mattress, best one we've ever slept on. Too bad that the company doesn't air them out prior to shipping as i believe they will lose business, a lot of business, over that noxious odor and consequent ill physical effect the customer experiences. Nobody should have to put up with that for what you pay for this mattress!
We recently purchased the serta icomfort eloquent dream firm mattress through Macys and have had no chemical smell, or mold smell issues. however, we received 2 free promotional pillows serta "Icomfort" in the post 2 days ago and they smelled very strong of chemicals. I fluffed the pillows often and let them air out a bit. got a headache the first night but not the second. The smell is fading with every fluff. Knowing the smell that everyone has complained about, if this hadn't started to fade- they would for sure be going back. So Happy the company is rectifying the problem because I haven't slept soo good in years!
Same issue with the smell here. Bought the mattress 4 days ago and was told to air it out. It's still mild outside, so airing it out hasn't been a problem, but I strip the bed of its sheets every night to facilitate the "airing out." If the odor doesn't dissipate in another week, I will return the mattress as "defective." I identified the odor as "stale Bulgarian popcorn" and my very friendly saleswoman at Macy's, albeit not informed about this problem, said, "What does that smell like?" I too think the manufacturer should off gas the gel foam before delivering it. So far, it's been a painful break-in period.
My husband and I have had nothing but problems with this mattress. We ordered a Serta emphatic to replace the Serta savant because it wasnt comfortable in July of this year. That one was broken so they delivered a 3rd serta emphatic. The savant did not have an odor but he emphatic smelled like mold or mildew to us. It burned our nose..I felt it in my mouth..my throat and sinuses hurt and my husband and I had terrible headaches. I knew something was wrong if both of us were affected. Gardner White told us there was nothing we could do since this was our third mattress. Oh i was mad... so you will just let there be a health issue to where I am going to go to the hospital and oh well huh? I called Serta's corporate office and spoke to Eric. He was very helpful..but said he had never heard of this before...which I find hard to believe seeing all of the complaints about these online. He visited the Gardner White Warehouse and had another mattress delivered..our 4th one. We were so happy the smell wasnt there...for a few days. Then the smell slowly came to us and is making us as sick as ever. Me way more than my husband this time. It doesnt burn my throat as bad this time but I still get terrible headaches and fogginess and my sinuses are going to be completely destroyed when Im done breathing these fumes. I have had this one since the end of august and the smell is not getting better even though we both have slept on it with windows open and fans on every day. I have been crying every day for a week knowing we paid close to $2000 for a mattress that is making us sick and no one will do anything about it. Why would I pay that much for a mattress to set it outside for a couple months to air out? It should have been done before the customer got it..this is ridiculous and unacceptable. Do not get a Serta memory foam mattress if you are sensitive to chemicals.
My wife and I also bought a Serta mattress here in Colombia, Southamerica, and off course, we also have the same annoying odor issue with it, since the day it was delivered, a week ago. As many people said, the worst part is not the very big ammount of money we paid for it, we paid more than 8.000 dollars for two electric twin beds and two Serta foam mattresses, the worst part is not to know how dangerous those chemicals really are in the long term for our health. I am very very dissapointed of Serta. We bought it because we trusted on American manufactured products, but now we are not so sure.
We have had the Savant for three weeks and I'm getting a sore throat and stomach problems about an hour every night after going to bed. The salesmen at Mattress Firm told me that in all the years he has sold beds that I'm the first person to complain about the mattress making me sick, The person at Serta told me the same thing.
My wife and I purchased the serta icomfort about two months ago. We were both very excited to move up to this almost 2000.00 dollar mattress. The odor is still terrible. We were told by the retailer that it would go away after a few weeks, but it has not. I would describe the smell as a musty. The smell also gets into the bed sheets and comforter. We have had it. We are fed up. Going to talk to retailer tomorrow about a replacement. I will be sniffing the next one before accepting it.
My wife and I purchased the i comfort mattress and it was delivered on December 1. We have had issues. The first night I woke up so dizzy and started to dry heave. My wife has been nauseous for the entire month. I have had a "sinus infection" and was put on antibiotics. I still have a cough….a month later. My wife has had diarrhea for the entire time which started the night we got the mattress. This week she started throwing up and having diarrhea at the same time. She was hospitalized for 2 days. We are now sleeping in another room and can't wait for our mattress to be picked up. Thank god there is a 120 guarantee and we don't have to pay to return it with a restocking fee. We will be checking our other beds that DON'T smell.
I received delivery of a Canadian-made Serta Abberton II Smart Surface mattress on January 18th. Within one day I noticed the strong chemical smell. It made me feel nauseous, dizzy, and gave me a headache. Three weeks later it still smells, albeit less so. I called Serta and the rep was useless. I bought it at The Bay in Toronto, so I gave them a call. They were helpful and sent a Furniture Technician. He smelled it and said he'll report that there is an odour and that I should be given some options from The Bay, including an exchange. He directed me to call them in a week. Although he said I might be sensitive to chemicals and if I get a new one, I'll be back to square one with the stench. I've been walking around feeling slightly dizzy for a week now. I'm going to call The Bay and see what they can do for me. Maybe they have an organic option to which I can upgrade. I'll update you on my results.
Update on the Serta Abberton II from Hudson's Bay in Toronto: I'm happy to report that I waited to see if the odour would dissipate, and it did. It took about three to four weeks for the sickening odour to fade. If it didn't, the store would give me the option of exchanging for a new version of the same or upgrading (at my cost) or downgrading (and getting a credit). Now it's a great mattress, and kudos to The Bay for giving me fair options.
We just purchased a new Serta iComfort Applause and holy cow! The smell is overwhelming. It's been a week and still very strong. While I'm aware that it take a few weeks to really dissipate, I wonder how this is affecting our health. We haven't slept in months due to our old bed (a new replacement from Sealy due to warranty issues) being horridly uncomfortable, so neither my husband or I are able to really wait and sleep elsewhere. The worst part is: in the mornings when I use the restroom, MY URINE SMELLS LIKE THE MATTRESS. Seriously?!? These chemicals are literally being absorbed into my body... God I hope I don't end up with cancer. Supposedly Serta uses safe materials, but they're pretty vague about what.
Do not buy a Serta iConfort Applause the Noxious fumes are overwhelming! Purchased from Sears got the run around about the fumes will go away in two weeks, that didn't happen. Can't stay in the same room with the mattress! Calling Sears again if they don't replace it or refund my money I will take legal action! Also sending a review to Consumer Report as I'm on their review panel.
Have had Sealy Posturepedic Mattress in guest room for 2 years now. Every time a guest sleeps in there they complain of the smell and headache and sinus problems, itching eyes. Has anyone contacted Sealy directly. Maybe there is a recall?
Just bought an iComfort mattress and the chemical smell is unbearable. We can't even walk in the room where it is. Raymour and Flannigan will not refund us - what to do?!?
Writing this review on night 1 of ownership of a Sealy I comfort mattress. The smell coming from this mattress is unbearable, and since this is the first night we have had it, I'm hoping it goes away soon, but as of now, it is making both myself, and my wife sick. I cant believe I just spent this sum of money on something that I might have to throw outside so that I can live in my own house
We just had our Sealy Icomfort delivered Friday the 13th of February 2015. I think it is the best nights sleep ever as far as comfort. The smell was the worst ever. I have been dizzy, nauseated and having headaches. There is no question that the dizziness etc is due to the new mattress. The sales rep said the fumes were not toxic. That's comforting, lol. The smell is subsiding or I am getting use to it. I can definitly still smell it and I am not spending as much time in bed because of the odor. I spent a lot of money and I wish I had known about the odor beforehand because I can't return the mattress. Praying the odor will go away! I went and bought a bunch of febreeze plug ins because the odor stunk up my bedroom/closet/bathroom which is very large. This odor will carry.
We had our icomfort savant delivered on 2/28/15 and cannot believe the odor. After calling Serta, I was told to take the sheets off the bed, open the windows and run a fan to dissipate the odors. This is unacceptable as it has been zero degrees or below.
I had an iComfort Savant EFV delivered on February 17, 2015 and the odor was and still is strong although not as strong as first couple of weeks. I also called Serta. The first CSR I spoke with said the odor would disappear and compared it to new carpet smell, which is nothing like the smell coming from the mattress. After another week, I called Serta again about the toxic smell, and the CSR told me to make sure the mattress was in a well ventilated room (temps in the 20's so difficult to ventilate the room). Also said it could take up to two weeks to dissipate. It is hard to understand how a company can sell any product, especially one you are sleeping on, that emits toxic odors. Thank goodness I have a couple of beds upstairs and am not sleeping on the iComfort. I will talk to the store where I bought the mattress about options.
I purchased a Serta Bradshaw at Sears 2 weeks ago and it still stinks. I leave the window open all the time and have washed my sheets and mattress cover several times. It is toxic.
I was a salesperson at SEARS and sold all models of beds .. all beds have chemicals... part of the FDA.. fire retardants.. you have to have a prescription from a doctor to get a chemically free bed.. but the bed company will not make if for you. Any large bed company is in league with the same government organization and can 'pay them off'. However, the bed company must give you a list of chemicals any bed contains upon request.
I had icomfort. I started to have joint aches so bad I couldn't get out of the car by myself, couldn't walk in the morning at all, etc. I'm 40, female. I thought it's because I gained 10 pounds. But then because I hardly could move so I gained next 30 pounds. I never thought to blame the mattress for my bad shape. I thought of infammation, cancer etc. But thankfully the mattress developed soft spots so I got a spring one. The next day my aches were half gone and I could walk! 2 days after I'm my old fit self! Be aware, it's a poison! Sertade me really sick. I wonder how it's possible I didn't connected my health problems with the mattress earlier! I'm happy to get rid of it.
Just bought a brand new Serta its going back, had it a week, I will put it on my porch because my entire house stinks and the family is getting ill.
Had my king I comfort and movable frame delivered in March. Very cold weather and snow. They could not get it on the elevator of my high rise apt building because it would not bend. It would joy bend because they had left it in the delivery truck overnight and the mattress froze. They returned it to the store and delivered the next day or two. The fumes were very bad. Chemical. Windows raised and we slept on the sofa in the LR for a few days. Still the odor persisted. We wanted it to go away but it stayed for prob 2-3 months. Sheets didn’t fit. Headaches and nausea. I have health issues. Now the mattress feels like it has lost its (medium firm) softness on the top. I’m not sleeping well. I’ll have to look at my warranty. I don’t feel the store would hold up to it’s promise, with business so bad these days, if I wanted to return. I would feel with so many people unhappy and having the same problem, iComfort would want to do the right thing. They’ve already been out to repair the frame when one side was broken. They told me that the delivery men didn’t do the proper setup and that was the problem. When I complained to the store where I bought it, they told me we should walk up and down on the mattress to distribute the insides to the outer edges. We are in our 70’s and I don’t feel safe walking around on top of my mattress. I would like a replacement without a hassle, if that is possible. I haven’t been sleeping well and I believe the frozen mattress could have caused a mold problem. What can you say, IComfort?
I purchased an icomfort blue max almost 2 years ago, and the noxious smell is still as strong as the first day. It never went away. I have it in a spare bedroom with the door closed. If I sleep on it I become violently ill. Headaches, nausea, lungs congested and burning, etc. The entire room reeks of chemicals, and any sheets or blankets that you put on it will also be bathed in the chemical smell. I can’t take it anymore, and I am giving it away tomorrow. Too late to get my money back. This is absolutely absurd. Serta should be notified that this is completely unacceptable.
Hi, I just saw your review as we bought Serta Comfort foam mattress for our 4 year-old son. It is delivered today and smells bad like you mentioned. I'm also sensitive to chemicals and have hashimato. After reading the reviews and experiencing the strong smell, I'll talk to store soon. I was wondering did the store accepted to refund or Serta rep helped you for that? Telling the symptoms did work or did you need to threat with a negative review on the mattress? Thank you in advance,
