Worth any price - they don't make 'em like this anymore?!

My 1st bed for 1st apartment. Liked quality at Sears so bought bed there. Hoped for comfort that would last "awhile". They say a bed lasts 10 yrs., - I've had mine 43! I rotate, flip & vac it 2x a yr. At the 25 year mark, began to have a little sag - put a board under rt. side. At the 30 year mark, felt some spring pressure. Bought a thick mattress pad & a foam pad. At 35 yrs. felt springs much more but overall still an ex. bed. Afraid to get rid of it. Heard many bad stories from others about new beds bought. Tried beds in stores - can't find anything even close (only a King Koil king on vacation, but K.Koils near me are not the same). Mine is 6" high & my sheets just about fit. Many beds now are much thicker, maybe to cover poor support structure? I, & many others, would give almost anything to find this bed again!!

Pros:

  • Long-Term Comfort
  • Overall Value

I agree; the Sears-o-pedic is the best matress I have ever owned and / or ever slept on. Mine is a single but after I married, it was passed on to one of my children. It is over 30 years old and it's still the best mattress in the house. I need a new queen mattress and would love to find the same one for me.

Shawn, was sent your comments. Glad you've enjoyed Sears-o-pedic. It was well made & had a good balance of cushioning & support. Also like the poly cover, not new white stuff w/rises or dips - can get worn/dirty (easy to vacuum too). Wayfair may have ok bed? - check the ratings. Was told the Sears bed may have been Beautyrest?! If anyone finds a bed nearly as good, let us know. If I do, I'll try to post here. Thanks.

Hi Judy, Your experience with Sears-O-Pedic (Firm)sounds just like mine from 1980! I just flipped mine & put a strait-edge on it....still no sag. However, It is getting to the point where I am not sleeping quite as good & am searching for a replacement. It doesn't owe me a dime. From what I have read & heard new mattresses are not built like these were. Definitely a tough thing to decide on a new one with the endless hype & marketing gimmicks. Reading comments & reviews just adds to the confusion. Thanks. -Joe

Mass-market stores may not have the kind of bed we're looking for. Most have "bed-in-a-box. I'm sorry but you can't, or shouldn't, really roll springs (looks to me, in crosscuts, that springs now are short/small). Best quality could be at small, independent, local mattress companies. Perhaps friends, family or neighbors can advise on what to look for and what to avoid. Perhaps try Macy's or Wayfair (though I think Macy's may not be selling mattresses now?) Just heard the Sears bed may have been by Sealy, Serta or Simmons, not just Beautyrest. Perhaps try going to their websites to see what's available. Good luck!

La traduction dit que vous avez un bon matelas apres un voyage de magasinage fatigant. Qu'est-ce que le rilen et le vord? Qu'est-ce rue la marque de matelas? Merci pour l'e-mail.

Still seeking an affordable replacement innerspring bed, 6" high (most are very thick - and heavy - and I can't get all new sheets), flat on top w/polyester covering and not rolled in a box (do they roll to save the cost of a little cardboard?) The springs are really starting to come through mine. I have back problems and other issues and may need to choose a replacement soon. Have read a few ok reviews but didn't have $ at the time to try them. Anyone find anything good??
