Beautyrest Black - 2 weeks in

So far, so good. We got this mattress 2 weeks ago and have been sleeping well without back pain or losing circulation. We'd had a Beautyrest previously and had been happy for about 5 1/2 years until we started feeling like we were sleeping in two canyons on either side of the bed... Because I'm a light sleeper I had a non-negotiable committment to buy another BeautyRest. Just to compare we did try some Sertas and some TempurPedic. Sertas almost felt like waterbeds compared to the BeautyRest. The TempurPedic was actually better than BeautyRest at reducing motion transfer but we weren't willing to spend that much. I'd say the durability score is preliminary because we've only had it for two weeks but I'll try to update after a few months...

Pros:

User also said: Simmons top of the line offering has "Advanced Pocketed Coil" - supposed to provide 20% more motion dampening effect than the entry level BeautyRest models. I can't say I'm sensitive enough to gauge 5% vs. 20% vs. 50% but the bottom line is this mattress is very good at minimizing motion transfer. It also seems to do a good job striking a balance between the firm support we both wanted for back sleeping but not being so firm that your arms/shoulders fall asleep if you try to sleep on your side. While the Napa is the firmest model offered in the Black line, it does still have a measurable amount of padding/soft "stuff" on top. So much so that my husband was skeptical that this was actually a "firm" mattress. However I had been told by several reps in the store that you can't really judge the true firmness of the mattress based on the top levels of padding- the firmness is determined by the strength/construction of the coils inside.

So here's the update. Shortly after the initial review my husband started complaining of back pain with the mattress; I still liked it. One night I tried sleeping on his side and I had to agree with him - it was not comfortable. We actually submitted a warranty claim to Simmons, our claim was approved and now we're waiting for the new mattress to be delivered... So, I'd say - stay tuned, I'll try to update re: how the new version works out for us....

I just had my first night on a SImmons Beatyrest Black locally called the "Hutton" sold by better bedding. Its supposed to be a Push/firm bed and in the store felt like a plush bed. Last night it was definately a firm and I was up all night. I think I liked my camp crash pad better to be honest. I think this is either the firm or the store model was very broken in. Stay tuned.

I have heard that much of the problems are caused in the pillow tops. They do break down rather quickly. I was told to stay away from the pillow top. Plus I bought a firm. The springing is a thicker gauge and should last longer. We'll see!

So far I have slept on two BeautyRest black beds: the Lola, a latex foam model, and the Extra Firm. Both,, soft and firm, left me with excruciating lower back pain. After talking with others with similar experiences, I have deduced that the "Advanced Pocketed Coil" system is the culprit, not the softness or firmness of the mattress. For my spine, the coil system allows too much "sink" for my rear end, and this is true both on my side and my back. I am average weight, and the others who had this issue also are also slender people. I guess it works for some, but for me--my old traditional innerspring mattress is giving me some relief while I research beds all over again.

If you one of the few people who is still using the lighted tobacco drug, be aware that doing so around a mattress will immediately void any warranty (as should be the case, of course). First, enter tobacco-drug rehab and THEN buy a new mattress.
