Hi there.

I am trying to determine the difference between a gel memory foam mattress or just a regular memory foam mattress. To be specific, I am trying to decide between a Dynasty Mattress New Cool Breeze 12-Inch GEL Memory Foam Mattress and a Sleep Innovations 12-Inch SureTemp Memory Foam Mattress 20-Year Warranty. I am new to the memory foam mattress world, but felt like I was in sleep heaven when I slept on a memory foam mattress at a friend's house last year. Since I am in the market for a new mattress, I thought that I would purchase a memory foam.

My friend was unable to get me specific information on the exact type/model of her mattress, but I need to purchase anyway. Was hoping that someone could give me more specific information to think about when it comes to this mattress purchase.

I like a firm bed, that also has a little bit of give. Which is why I really liked her mattress.

Thank you.

Memory foam consists of 61 chemicals, some toxic. Contrary to all the hype, it's the worst material ever invented for use in or as a mattress. Don't be fooled by the warranty. It's as worthless as the memory foam.

I agree with Peter on this one. Memory foam is nothing more than chemically treated upholstery foam, that slows its recovery. Also a bed with 12" of memory foam is massive overkill. Memory foam is not a supportive foam, it just takes the shape of your body. The support comes from what is beneath the memory foam. So if you put 3" over an innerspring or latex core, you have some decent support. But 12" of memory foam??? You could just as well be sleeping in a bean bag. You will keep sinking in with no real support for your back.

Also I should point out that there is no such thing as a 20 year warranty. It is probably 5-10 full and 10-15 prorated. Read it carefully. If the store tells you its 20 full, read the fine print. I can't tell you how many customers call in and swear they were sold a 20 year warranty on one of our beds. It's a sales tactic plain and simple. Read everything they put in front of you and ask questions.

If you want real support take a look at our waterbed products on our website. We have been building waterbeds for over 25 years and have sold over 1,000,000 all over the world. A waterbed is the only mattress that offers proper back support and it won't necessarily wear out after 10 years. Most of our customers still have their original Sterling waterbed from 20 years ago. They are just that good. After you sleep on a waterbed, you realize how bad, and gimmicky, some of these other beds really are.

I don't normally pitch my own product, but I hate to see someone taken advantage of with a 12" memory foam mattress. Don't buy into the hype.

Most likely, the 12" mattress is a combination of memory foam over block foam. The memory foam provides the comfort level, the block foam, the support. I haven't sold the brands you mention ; however, it is known that the gel memory foam initially feels cool, but heats to body temperature after a couple of hours. It is the new "buzz" in mattress manufacturing…if it costs more than the memory foam, do without the addition of gel. There's always a trend created by mattress manufacturers to create conversation. Memory foam mattresses can certainly be comfortable and tend to be firm-med firm. Bed in a Box tends to have softer models.
