We have a Beautyrest Classic Rock Island Pillowtop mattress. We like it but have noticed a strange pungent odor emitting from it. Has anybody else had that experience with this mattress?

What you're experiencing is your mattress "off gassing" chemicals into your home. You breath these chemicals in, especially at night, and they can make you sick. Although the "new mattress smell" appears to go away after a few days or weeks, the off gassing never stops... you just get used to it. If you want to sleep on a mattress that doesn't off gas, stay away from polyurethane foams (memory foam) or chemical flame retardants. Mattresses made from natural materials like wool, cotton, and natural latex won't off gas like mattresses made with polyurethane foam while still providing both the comfort and support you need. |
Why do they make mattresses with toxic chemicals? The reason why people do crappy things is always the same...money. Memory foam has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer. 61 different chemicals are used to make memory foam....some, of which are highly toxic. There is no one policing this industry, so many take advantage of that, at the expense of the health and welfare of the consumer. The only thing that will cause the change needed, is a lawsuit. Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented. It sleeps hot, wears quickly and presents a health hazard. It is thee thing to avoid, when shopping for a mattress.

I also purchased a Beautyrest mattress from Macy's a week ago, have had the window open and over head fan on..... very toxic smell, I am returning it next week, I just hope that my clothes in closet don;t smell like this smell, have my room closed off to the rest of the house. Very disappointing when you think you are getting a nice new king mattress and have to return it cause of the smell... Why do they make mattresses with toxins in them....

I have had a BeautyRest Vanderbilt collection mattress for 10 years and it still smells terrible. I have just had to live with it, until now. Have ordered an organic mattress that I hope will not be like this!
