My husband and I purchased our first foam mattress, excited about the comfort and lack of motion sensitivity. Upon delivery of our Serta iComfort Insight, we noticed a noxious odor once the plastic came off the mattress. We were told by the delivery men that it would go away by nightfall. . . Well, it did not, and we spent every day airing the room (in cold weather), washing the sheets, walking on the mattress to release the odor, and, to no avail. I have a sensitivity to chemicals, so I was taking precautions with my meds every night before going to bed. When I spoke with the Serta rep he said that they recommend leaving the mattress in an open airy space for 2 to 3 weeks before sleeping on it. . . Hm, no one in the store told us that! When asked what chemicals were in the mattress, he said it was proprietary info. After telling him I would make a video for utube demonstrating the processs needed to sleep on the mattress, he put me on hold and then came back with some info - boric acid, which, according to him, is also in apples that we eat every day - so safe! Does he realize that it is also in rat poison? . . . We continued to vent the room, wash the sheets, and use our ionic air purifier for a month. I kept waking with a clogged head, sinus drippage, and then I started getting leg cramps in the middle of the night. Our retailer took the mattress back after a month, and we exchanged it for a Simmons foam mattress, which we were assured did not have an odor. . . It does. It's going back.

I have had my iComfort for nearly 8 weeks and my wife and I have not experienced the fumes that you referenced in this review. I am getting a great nights sleep.
Noxious....not owning an Icomfort...still looking into it, that's why I am here reading these reviews...after reading yours, I am thinking the smell is not totally from the mattress but possibly from the store you bought it from since both the Icomfort AND the Simmons mattresses had a smells...two different mattresses, one store. The store may have a problem with storage (mold?) so might be using chemicals to clean the area that has since seaped into the mattresses...just a theory.
I don't think it was the store. The Serta rep told me that the mattress needed 'airing' for a considerable time. My understanding is that the memory foam can off gas for long periods of time, and if you are sensitive to the odor, it's not the mattress for you. . . The Simmons had a different odor that was activated by sleeping on the mattress. As the foam compresses, it off-gases.. . We were told that even inner spring mattresses made today all have layers of memory foam that have the chemicals that off-gas. We ae looking into a 100% natural latex mattress with organic cotton and wool cover padding. Our retail store manager was extremely helpful and understanding in resolving the issues with both mattresses.
These reviews are so conflicting I don't know what to think. I have a chronic pain condition and was really hoping one of these I comfort bed would help. What a disappointment.
I bought the iComfort Insight and I love it. I have no idea what "smell" this person is talking about. I have had no such problem with the mattress. It smells fine and I wake up feeling better than ever. There's my two cents.
I just bought an icomfort insight--my husband (bad sense of smell) doesn't notice the chemical/plastic smell. I hate the smell. I liked the bed in the store but after sleeping badly on it for last 4 nights, I think we need to exchange it. I hate the smell and find it uncomfortable--makes me feel 'stuck' in bed. HATE IT. If you are at all sensitive to chemical odors, avoid this bed.
I've had my iComfort Insight for a week. It didn't smell. It is firmer than in the store but I don't think it's uncomfortable. I'm hopeful it will loosen up. If it doesn't and I don't get used to it, I'll by a memory foam topper! We also bought the adjustable base which is very nice.
I am finding the smell very hard to deal with too. Ours has smelled of mould, we've had it for a month now, I will try to air it outside.
We have had our bed for a month, left it outside while floors were refinished in the house for 10 days,no smell what so ever.it is smaller, sheets don't fit.it is a bit firm, but my back feels much better. I never feel my husband move in the bed and I'm no longer rolling to the center with a sagging mattress. All in all 8/10 rating here.
My wife and I just had our first sleep in this mattress and woke up with terrible headaches. The mattress in the I comfort pillows have a strong odor. I suspect the fumes or odor is the source of our headaches.
I was in a bad MVA and bought this bed as I was told it's great for injuries. I was so excited when it was delivered and was told in store that this bed didn't 'off-gas'(lie). I have had this bed in my bdrm with patio doors open, 2 windows open PLUS a fan running non stop for over a week and the smell is still unbearable. My husband and I have yet to sleep on it because I've been trying to air it out the best I can because it's really nauseating. Tonight I attempted to sleep on it for the first time(after almost 'airing' for 2 weeks)and I feel dizzy, sick and getting a headache. I'm not someone that is overly 'sensitive' to harsh smells but holy smokes this bed is too much. Looks like I'll be sleeping elsewhere in the house until I can replace this mattress. I can't speak of its comfort as it's too freakin smelly to even sleep on! If I could, I'd get a refund and buy an organic mattress but I cannot so I'll be looking for the least 'toxic' mattess I can from the store we bought it from.
We bought a cool sense serta mattress from sleepys in Sept. 2012. We too had an issue with smell. Did the same as other reviewers. Had windows open for two weeks, walked on the mattress and put a fan in the room. We exchanged the mattress for a box spring, but the mattress smell continued to permeate our bedroom. We had bought a new Crate and Barrel bed made of unfinished teak. The whole bed smell s like the mattress. We just had our rugs cleaned and I can still smell it. I also called Sealys to find out what the ingredients are in the mattress and got the same answer "that information is proprietary". I talked to an indoor air specialist who wanted me to get a material safety data sheet from Sealys which would list the ingredients, but Sealys claimed that they did not have such a thing. I'm worried too as to what chemicals are in the mattresses. I was told by the salesman that these mattresses are manufactured in China. I'm not sure what kind of regulations they have in China. Very worried about what is floating around in our bedroom. We also did not dare sleep on the mattress. Way to noxious. We also returned it and ordered an organic mattress from another distributor.
I need a new mattress and was considering an icomfort prodigy mattress. My daughter has this bed (pruchased nearly 10 months ago) so I asked if I could try hers out while she and her husband were on vacation. My daughter claimed that she did not notice any excessive chemical smells even when the mattress was new. I do have some chemical sensitivities - and I did NOT notice any off-gassing fumes when I laid on the bed. Although I loved the comfort level of this mattress and, I woke up with a a slight headache, felt a little off balanced, and suffered severe brain fog which lasted for most of the day. This was the same for all three days of sleeping on this "comfortable" icomfort prodigy mattress. As soon as I was sleeping back at home in my 10 year old coil spring mattress these symptoms dissapeared. I guess I won't be purchasing an icomfort mattress. I wish I knew what is in these beds that make some sensitive people sick - then I would know what to look for (or avoid) when making a new mattress purchase.
I recently purchased a Serta mattress and was assured the same thing of the Boric acid. I have had symptoms that range from brain fog, to congestion with bloody mucus, to sore throat, all the way to headache and constricted air way. All of these symptoms happened to start the morning we woke up from the first nights' sleep. I called up at Serta and a woman named Michelle in Customer Service says "not to down play "my" symptoms, but I could just coincidentally be ill"...it has been over a week and they have just gotten worse so to you, Michelle, I say it is coicidence that my "illness" dispates when I leave my apartment only to return when I come back home...? So to see if this was just maybe an illness (after I went to the ER for constricted airway) we bought a vaporizer- to no avail. Then tried a humidifier- nope. So finally today we steamed the mattress, doused it in Lysol, and jumped on it. Hopefully that works, because after a week of almost no sleep I am a little cranky. I am hoping that we do not have to get an organic mattress because they cost a fortune we just don't have right now!!
The odor is not from the store as we also just had an incomfort savant delivered and it arrives sealed in plastic from the factory. It immediately starting filling up the room with a noxious toxic smell. We also immediately started getting headaches, sore throats, and lung congestion...now on day three we are still having the same symptoms when we wake up and the smell has not gone away. We had to have our windows open all day in subzero temperatures just to try to air it out...and while the smell has decreased a little, its still noxiously there and we will be leaving the windows open again...great on the heat bill here in the northeast. We don't have much option then to deal with it and feel awful, as our bed was taken away and we can't return it for 3 weeks.
I bought the I comfort Savant and also noticed the chemical smell. It has now been 3 weeks and I feel as though the smell has gotten better, but still there. And at times it does make me feel sic to my stomach. But that being said the smell does not bother my husband at all. I do find it much more comfortable than the old innerspring mattress that I had before, but slightly harder to get out of bed in the morning. That is probably due to my age and ability to move around. I to am hoping the smell goes away. I did not notice the smell in the store when trying out the Serta mattress. I also would like to say that I bought the Serta waterproof mattress pad, and another good quality padded mattress pad. Both were washed and dried and do not smell, but I can still smell the mattress through two pads and bottom sheet. Serta I wish you had some answers to this problem.
What does consumer reports have to say ? Almost bought a coolsense today, now I will investigate further.
My husband and I purchased an icomfort savant mattress and it was delivered 3 weeks ago. The chemical smell is terrible. You would think the smell would be gone by now........but no, it is not. We put a mattress cover, bottom sheet, top sheet, 3 blankets between us and I still can smell the chemicals. We air the mattress out every day with the windows open and a fan running. I don't know what else to do to make the smell go away. What chemicals are in this mattress????? I am a breast cancer survivor and I pray whatever chemical is in this mattress is not a carcinogen!!!! How do I find out what is in this mattress?????
we bought a SERTA mattress the 23rd of February and I have been so sick ever since. the week we got it I came down with what the doctor said was Flu. Bronchitis, and strep all at the same time. I had to have steroid shots and am keeping an inhaler too. I am very sensitive to chemcicles and am having a very hard time with this it has disrupted my whole life. There are 7 people in our home and 2 others have had breathing problems and constant cough that gets better when we leave the house. This all started the week the mattress was purchased ...the bed felt great but I havent even been able to stay at ho,e. Going to move it out for ahwile and see if problems improve...so diappointed :(
Omg I just bought Icomfort pillows two days ago and they smell Terrible like chemicals these are so going back to the store and they will b happy i dont get legal advice and sue these people because this is ridiculous worse ever
I bought the Icomfort Insight and i am having the same issues with the fumes. I have had it now for 5 weeks and slept on it twice and felt very ill each morning. It has been in the bedroom wiht no sheets and windows open.
I decided to take the cover off the matrress( it comes with the mattress) and it seems the fumes are much less on the bed-- but the cover smells horrible wiht all the noxious fumes. So thinking i might wash the cover and see how that goes.
We have had our Serta Savant for one week. On the morning after our first sleep we had pounding headaches and dizziness. We have been washing sheets and mattress covers, airing out the bedroom in very cold temperatures hoping the toxic odor goes away. We have found the mattress comfortable, but for the price, and the inconvenience of trying to tolerate it. I'm not sure it is worth keeping. With all of the engineering that went into the product, I can't believe it was put on the market without field testing it. The off gases are intolerable- a most noxious odor, still there one week later.
